Walking: Weight Loss Staple

Walking is the most common form of exercise, but also the most-often forgotten. It is not sexy, not in, not cool. But it is effective. Here is some more evidence for walking (or other types of aerobic exercise):

A recent study shows that aerobic exercise like walking is better than strength training for getting rid of the fat that lies deep within the body. Both types of exercise were effective at losing fat from just beneath the skin. But aerobic exercise, alone or combined with strength training, helped people shed deep fat from around their organs and waists, as well as beneath the skin. Plus, the aerobic exercisers were less insulin resistant.

News Of The Month

StarSTARS OF THE MONTH are LJay & SB. They are new to exercise, but have come to make it a near-daily habit, usually together for support. They started out training with us twice a week, but have been able to cut down to once with a trainer and the rest on their own. Outside of work, exercise has become "the only thing that matters." LJay lost 3 pounds early on, but they realize that their success is only partially reflected on the scale, so they are not overly concerned with their weight. SB is proud that she now has "muscle in my arms and not just stuff".

WM's football coach is amazed at his strength and effectiveness improvement on the field.

DG has given me a unique opportunity. With some new medications, she has to eat 20 grams of fat 3 times a day, so I have been counseling her to eat the same things that I spend the rest of the day telling you NOT to eat. But, life is cruel, because one of the side effects of these same meds is that none of these desserts and fatty foods tastes good! OH NO!

WR is the only person I know who gets hurt in his sleep much more often than when he's awake.

RW hid the ankle cuffs one day, but was tricked into revealing their hiding place by being presented with an even worse alternative exercise.

PW's chiropractor told her that her improvement in strength had also improved her back health.

There are 2 pictures of Jeanne's husband in the November issue of Memphis Magazine - volunteering for the Food Bank, as does Jeanne.

Jenna came to her mom's (Mel) workout and taught me some new vocabulary words.

As many of you know, Trainer Mike's son (and client) Matt is the Head Engineer at Sun Studio. He helped Chris Isaak record his latest cd at Sun earlier in the year, and it was just released with an acknowledgement to Matt for helping the band find all the best fried chicken places in town. Plus, he got an assistant engineer credit as well. Makes a trainer-father proud.

Quote Corner

Trainer Mike: "OK, now let's do the kneeling trio."
SB: "I think they deserve a better name - how about kneeling troika?"
Trainer Mike: "I gotta admit, that's much classier. How do you spell it?"

Welcome new clients: JPT, CW, and JN. Welcome back: Mel (and Jenna).

Welcome Amy

Change is still in the air at Healthy Habits. The exterior work is virtually complete, the lobby makeover is about halfway done, and we are offering some new programs. And now, we have a new trainer.

Amy Williams has joined the Healthy Habits family. Amy owns Amy's ABSolute Fitness and is also a Zumba Instructor. She is certified as a Personal Trainer by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She has a passion for helping overweight kids and adults find their inner exerciser. Look for Amy to offer Zumbatronic classes here in the new year.

Originally a Texan, Amy has lived in Memphis since 1993, so hopefully by now she knows what real orange looks like. She is married with children, loves to run, especially along the Wolf River, and has a lifelong commitment to fitness.
