Overeaters Are Us

As you know, about 70% of US adults are overweight or obese, so I think it's safe to say that we all overeat, at least occasionally. The question is: Why? According to an article in the May 2011 Nutrition Action Newsletter, 51% of people said they overate because they were really hungry, 37% because the food was great and 12% because of emotions, boredom, or having a bad day. But we also know that self-reported data is subjective.

In this article, I list some external cues that lead us to eat more. Each one links to my blog, where you can read a summary of the research findings on each cue. There's just too much information for this newsletter. All the research was done by Brian Wansink, a professor at Cornell and the author of Mindless Eating - Why We Eat More Than We Think. You can learn even more at his website mindlesseating.org.

So here are the external cues he researched:
Of course, if you want to take a short cut, you can just go to the blog that summarizes the action you can take to set up external cues to eat smaller amounts. Please note that I did NOT say that you can avoid or work around these external cues, because YOU CAN"T. External cues are everywhere, and are often unnoticed, even when you may be looking for them. And they're insidious, so you may catch them for awhile, but no one can catch them all, every time.
News Of The Month

StarSTAR OF THE MONTH is TG, who has returned to training with a vengeance after a long layoff. He has increased all his weights, added stretching to his workout, and continues to warm up with walks around the block, despite the heat. His wife complimented him on his 'guns', and me for helping him get them. And last but not least, he arranged a truly wonderful surprise for my wife and me on our anniversary.

NM has rediscovered "Billy the Exterminator". In one show, Billy rescued a raccoon caught in a tree with its' head stuck in a jar, trapped someone's pet bobcat, chased pigeons from a historic theater, and cleared a shack of wasps. And you thought your job was bad!

CL's formerly tight workout pants are now practically falling off.

Quote Corner

TG: "Can we do some lunges now?"

Trainer Mike: "Huh?"

MD: "I can really feel my core working with these exercises!"

MF: "Why are you making me do all the things I hate?"

Trainer Gaye: " We can alternate them if you want."

MF: "I'd better not tell you what I want right now!"

Trainer Gaye: "Your hips look smaller."

CL: "Yes, I have literally worked my butt off!"

Welcome back JP.
