10 Health Habits for Living to 100

Continuing on the theme I started last month, these healthy habits (taken from US News & World Report) will help you live independently well into your 90s:

1. Don't Retire. Or at least stay active in something - gardening, volunteering, etc.

2. Floss daily. Flossing helps keep bacteria out of your mouth, from where it can get in the bloodstream and clog your arteries. I'm not kidding - flossing is good for your heart.

3. Move around. Exercise is the closest thing there is to a fountain of youth.

4. Eat a fiber-rich cereal for breakfast. It helps control your blood sugar all day.

5. Sleep at least 6 hours a night.

6. Eat whole foods, not supplements. There is no evidence that a single nutrient has an effect; rather it's the interaction of everything in the food that seems to work.

7. Be less neurotic. Learn to roll with the punches instead of internalizing things.

8. Live like a 7th day Adventist. They live 10 years longer than average by treating their body like a temple and focusing on family and community.

9. Be a creature of habit. Develop healthy routines and stick to them, like going to bed and waking up at the same times each day.

10. Stay connected. Regular contact and involvement with others keeps depression away and gives you a second set of eyes on your own health.

News of the Month

Healthy Habits FitnessStar of the Month for July is JenP, who has now last 38 pounds since starting with us ,and is changing her eating habits again to get off her temporary plateau and lose some more. Her once-snug workout pants are now hanging loose.

Last month's Star NaMo continues her excellent progress, having lost 6.5 inches in Q2 for a total of 17 inches this year.

Special K reports that her back is much better since  we began focusing on strengthening her core.

Star of the Month for August is new client JS, who came in to workout despite being in a wreck earlier that same day!

LL threatened Trainer Gaye with the TRX straps.

Eliz discovered a wide new world of healthy eating at Whole Foods and at HH with a party pack of energy bars. By the way, Fitness Magazine listed both Kashi and Fiber 1 energy bars as great snacks - both are free at HH.

Trainer Gaye did 2 sets of 10 full push ups for the first time since her 6 arm operations.

Quote Corner:

AH, after her first class: "I'm sore. A good sore. But real sore!"

DOC: "Don't need a towel. Not gonna work that hard." Uh Huh. Trainer Gaye will see about that.

SM: "Why does time go by so much quicker in Rest mode?"

JB, after a workout: " I feel morally improved!"

SM: "Tuesday you killed me - I had to take a nap."
Special K: "Yeah, he was whining about it all day."

BR: " Mike, I can't make it today so my wife is coming instead - y'all can workout or fool around or whatever." First time I ever received a husband's blessing to fool around with his wife.

Welcome August new clients JBill, LAD, AH, MegT, DOC and returning clients SalP and PPat. And September new clients JS, SS, JJ, and DVD.
