During the past month we've taken a look at 22 of the top leaders, organizations and issues that have the opportunity to be a catalyst for the business as mission movement during the upcoming year (Click here to view a summary of all 22). This week that countdown comes to a close as we take a look at the top five. Thank you for everyone who emailed me your nominations. I'm humbled to see both the number and the passion of your submissions and your comments about the postings. Please feel free to email me your thoughts and any you would like to see included in the future.

Growing up in a Christian home it was natural to hear several different sermons every Sunday morning. Typically one of those came from the Pastor at our small church and the other from my father in the car ride home. Each time I continued to hear a passionate plea to live my life for Christ. At the time the only options that were given to me live that out came in the form of helping at a food shelter or during a church sponsored ministry activity. I never saw a connection between a career and my faith other than going to Seminary. There just seemed to be a subtle divide between what happened at church and during the work week.

Every significant movement can point to a book, paper, article or series of all of the above that communicates in one clear voice the vision of a movement. God is at Work by Ken Eldred defines and gives examples for the movement of Business as Mission with clear cut precision. Sharing from personal experience with two companies and acclaimed success Ken forecasts a movement of the Church and the Christian community to Business as Mission with speed similar to that of the response to the California gold rush.

The local church. It's impact is far reaching to the uttermost corners of the world. It is a vehicle that has stood the test of time. It has carried new ideas throughout the Christian community and to the far corners of the world. This reach gives pastors and church leaders the responsibility and opportunity to put the spotlight on a lot of different issues. In the United States that resulting force is evident even to congressmen and women who recognize the influence the words of church leaders can have on the outcome of an election.

Open your Fortune, Business 2.0, USA Today, or Wall Street Journal these days and you are certain to find some article pointing to the idea that businesses who are socially conscious will be rewarded in the area of profits and success. Look at environmental groups, charities, or the Nobel Peace Prize process and you find a hot button issue of social capitalism. Will that have a negative or positive for the business as mission movement?
You Tube. It's a cultural icon. Time magazine names "You " it's person of the year because of the growing advancements in technology and how individuals are using technology to connect like never before. Books can spark a movement. Videos can make it spread even faster. We live in an age of viral videos. Word spreads like wildfire because of images. There's just something about the sights and the sounds of the big screen that capture our attention and communicate a message.
