"The authors offer the mind-body
tools needed to break bad breathing habits
and recapture the respiratory power we're
born with. Exercises like "the 6-second
breath" aren't just quick and simple, they
can provide relief from conditions like high
blood pressure, anxiety, pain, and even
asthma and premature aging."
-Publishers Weekly Review/Web Pick of the
Week for "Perfect Breathing"
WE WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO TURNED OUT FOR
OUR BOOK RELEASE PARTY LAST MONTH. It was a
spectacular success. Pictured above is us
with Jean Auel, author of the best-selling
"Clan of the Cave Bear" and several others.
Without her support, our book never would
have seen the light of day. We can't thank
her, and all of you, enough for believing in
us.
We received a great review from Publishers
Weekly in late January. Click
here to read the full review. We also got
a nice mention in the March 2009 issue of
Martha Stewart's Body + Soul magazine.
This month we're presenting an essay we did
with Heiner Fruehauf, founding professor of
the School
of Classical Chinese Medicine at the National
College of Natural Medicine here in Portland.
He offers a Qi Gong method, called Tumo, that
warms up the body basically through breathing
and visualization. Amazingly, it works. Give
it a try.
If you haven't yet snagged your
copy of "Perfect Breathing," it's available at

Stay Warm with Qi Gong's Tumo
Heiner Fruehauf talks about generating body heat
Here's an essay we did wth Heiner
Fruehauf, founding professor of the School of
Classical Chinese Medicine at the National
College of Natural Medicine in Portland,
Oregon.
Classic Oriental medicine teaches that we are
literally somewhere between heaven and earth.
All traditional medicine began as a way of
breathing the universal energy (chi) that our
bodies are programmed to receive. The
universe provides nourishment and breathing
is our way of absorbing it.
In Oriental medicine, the organs have a
different function than in Western medicine.
The lung is the master of chi and that of
course involves the breath. There are many
types of chi in the body, but breath chi is
the most fundamental. The Chinese know that
this is very ancient knowledge. They have
found texts created around 200 BC that talk
about breathing through your pores. The fact
that these exercises were compiled and mature
at about 200 BC leads scholars to believe
that the knowledge was probably developed
around 1000 BC and originated around 2000 BC.
One Tibetan exercise that specifically
focuses on breathing is Tumo. The Chinese
name for it, "Bow Ping Qi," means "precious
bottle breath." Tumo is a great exercise for
generating tremendous amounts of body heat in
a short amount of time using just the breath
and visualization.

HOW-TO: The Nurturing Meditation
In honor of Valentine's Day here's an exercise to bring partners closer together
This nurturing mediation is a simple yet
profound Tantric breathing exercise to help
sustain energy in a relationship and draw
partners closer together. It allows couples
to communicate on at least three levels:
- On the conscious level, skin to skin;
- On the respiratory level, breath to
breath; and
- On the most subtle level chakra to chakra
(which, as you may remember, are disks of
energy that correspond to specific areas of
the body - the base of the spine, the
genitals, behind the navel, the heart, the
throat, between the eyebrows and the crown of
the head). Over a period of time such regular
communication creates a kind of synergy
between the partners' chakras.
Couples lie together spoon fashion on their
left sides (for reasons of energy flow,
according to the ancient Tantric texts).
Whoever feels the most in need of nurturing,
whoever has experienced the most stress that
day, should take the inside.
