Greetings!
We hope that you have had a good start to 2010.

So far the year has been going well for us.  We're making progress on our legal work to care for kids and we're busier than ever working in our community.
Successful US Trip
In the fall we took a six week trip back to the US.  We really enjoyed seeing so many of our friends and family.  It's a pleasure for us to connect with so many of you face to face.

We want to give a special thanks to everyone who welcomed us into their homes and were such a blessing to us!
Library Progress

Reading TimeThings have been going well with our community library -- you can check on our blog to see more about it.  We've written about our goal of teaching children a love of reading, but as we've spent time with these kids, we've found so many more things to teach.  We see now that if we can help them to develop their self-esteem, creativity, originality, and problem-solving skills, it will be a big help for their futures.

Many times in the Honduran culture people ridicule what is different, and people often laugh at creative ideas.  This can squash self-esteem and people learn to stick to the status quo.  One example we've observed is that kids are taught that you can only color an object one color and if they do anything else they are laughed at.  Too often they are ashamed of their work and crumple every page and throw it away.

Doing PuzzlesBeyond just reading time, we've also incorporated craft time and puzzle time into the library schedule.  We're trying to teach them to break the coloring "rules" and to think in new ways.  We've created make believe worlds on paper, where trees are made of strange colors and patterns and we told the kids their paper cannot look just like their neighbor's.  Puzzle time seems to be the kid's favorite part of the afternoon.  From the timidity of never having built a puzzle, the kids are now building them faster and faster, gaining confidence and problem-solving skills.

The Honduran school year starts next week.  For this year we will continue our two days of library a week, plus teach two days of English classes at our village elementary school, and add a weekly, advanced English class for students from Instituto El Rey.
2010 Construction Projects
With the new year we are starting in on construction projects anew.  The first building project we'll complete this year will be a playground.  In February we will host a group of teenagers from Canada that comes to Honduras every year to put up a playground.  We've been on the list for a couple years, and now it's our turn.  So, within a period of four days in February they will put up a playground behind our library.

Later in the year we will be putting up an activity center beside the library and playground.  It will be a covered area with basketball hoops and soccer goals.  This will be the perfect space for kids to run around on during rainy days - it rains a lot here - and for community gatherings.  Some of our plans for this area include community movie nights and a Sunday morning children's ministry.

Volunteer House FoundationOur other big construction project for 2010 will be building a house for volunteers and groups.  We're currently working on the foundation of this house.

It has been amazing to see the development of our property.  As more buildings come up and we continue planning our use of the land, we get so excited for the future.  We anticipate the day when there will be kids running around, enjoying all that we've planned out at this time.

Blessed to be a Blessing

FrancescaRecently I (Jason) have had a theme in my mind that I really want to teach the children that we minister to on Sunday mornings.  The idea is that God gives us all blessings so that we can use them to bless others.  The entire reason we are blessed with things -- whether it's a house, a car, finances, or a good idea -- is to use them to make a difference in the lives of others.
Just a few days ago we had a situation that reminded me of this.  We were taking a walk through our village, and stopped by the house of one of our students, and found out a 9-year-old girl, Francesca, had been sick with a lot of abdominal pain and fever for days.  We got her some medicine for that night and arranged a morning ride for her to go the clinic our friends run.  At the clinic, Dr. Martin diagnosed her with appendicitis and was looking for a way to get her to the hospital in the city.  It happened that we drove up right then, headed down to La Ceiba.

Dr. Martin also had a young woman going into labor with her baby in the breeched position who also needed a ride to the hospital.  So we became the ambulance for the day.  We packed our truck with the girl with appendicitis and the young woman in labor, along with their mothers and headed to town, through the rain, going as slowly over the ruts and bumps as we could on the 22 miles of dirt road. Thankfully we made it the hospital and got them admitted before any babies were born or appendixes ruptured!

We thank God that we were at the right place, at the right time, with the means to help.

Good-bye to Checkbooks and Stamps
If you're anything like us, it's often hard to remember all of life's details.  We often get back from a busy "town day" in La Ceiba and remember that one important stop or phone call that we forgot.  In our busy world today we appreciate automatic things that are taken care of whether or not we remember to do them.

For that reason we're offering a new means of supporting Give Hope 2 Kids with automatic monthly donations.  From our website you can easily set up automatic donations with your debit card, credit card, or bank account and just as easily later stop or change the contributions.  We hope that this system of giving will make life easier and be one less "to do" lingering in the minds of our donors.  You can click on the subscribe button to set up automatic monthly payments.

Thank you for your support and prayers for Give Hope 2 Kids.  You are our means of reaching our community.  Our ministry is made possible by you!

Please check our blog periodically for more photos and updates to see how things are progressing.

We appreciate you,
