Cloaked Shopping Service Solves Sales Mysteries

Entrepreneurs Scott and Kathy Doering don?t seem all
that mysterious. But at the heart of their Naperville-
based business is a secret. A secret
shopper.
The couple opened Ann Michaels and Associates, a
mystery shopping service, in 1998. following careers
in banking and retail. Both had owned and operated
retail stores.
?We both place a high value on customer service and
know that good service is the backbone of any
company,? said Kathy Doering, company
president.
?Scott is very entrepreneurial, and is always thinking
about new businesses to start,? she said.
Eight years ago, he thought it would be of value to
send shoppers into stores anonymously to evaluate
customer service and selling techniques for
owners.
?He knew from experience that it is hard to always
be at the store as an owner,? Doering said. ?Yet, it is
also hard to leave, because you need to trust that
your customers are getting good service from your
employees.?
They researched the mystery shopping industry, and
found that in the late 1990s most companies were
located on the East and West coasts. The Midwest
was a fairly open market. Today, their Midwest
business is thriving, and the company is joining the
coastal firms, with a sales office in New York, and a
west coast office to open next year.
