Bike Lovers Apply Today!! The Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee Needs YOU!

Do you want to make Denver a more bike friendly city? Serve on the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC) and become an advisor to the Mayor and a liaison to the community. Reply with your letter of interest, application, and resume to Anthony Aragon at Anthony.Aragon@Denvergov.org by December 15. You will hear back by January 15. The letter should include a bit about the following:

How often do you ride a bike? Why?

Are you already a member of any bicycle organizations? Which ones?

Do you use public transportation? Combine it with bike trips?

Do you have 5 hours per month to attend monthly MBAC meetings and periodic working committee meetings? Volunteer for "homework" as needed?

Rank your interest in the following committees: policy, infrastructure, education.

What experience/skills will you bring to the work of the MBAC?

What would you like to accomplish during your term of service?

Support Denver Bike Sharing Two Ways

If you don't have the time to serve on the MBAC but would like to support cycling in Denver, participate in "Colorado Gives Day" on December 6th and give a donation to Denver Bike Sharing. The goal is to raise $10,000 and increase Denver Bike Share's donor base by 250 people.

To be part of the action, log on to www.GivingFirst.org on December 6th, use the search bar on the left side of the page to find "Denver Bike Sharing," and click to make your tax deductible deduction.

Want to be even more generous? Denver B-Cycle goes into hibernation for the winter season from December 9, 2011 to March 12, 2012. Help it wake up to a thriving spring season by purchasing Denver B-Cycle gift certificates for your friends and family. They make fantastic stocking stuffers AND they come with benefits! Just show your B-Cycle card and get great discounts at participating businesses around town. Click here for more information and a complete list of participating businesses.

Seasonal Tree Tips

We don't need to warn you that chainsaws are dangerous. A little common sense goes a long way. But we would like to remind you to take care when dealing with broken branches in the winter. Here are a few safety tips:

  • Inspect the area around your tree to ensure there are no overhead power lines
  • Look for broken/hanging branches and cracks or fractures within major limbs
  • Visit Trees Are Good for tree pruning advice or call a licensed arborist
  • If you do hire someone, make sure they are licensed through Denver Forestry (click on the website or call 720-913-0651 for a list of licensed contractors.)
  • Call Xcel Energy at 800-895-1999 to report power outages and/or other electrical emergencies

Denver "TreeCycle" - January 3rd - January 13th

And for your "indoor" trees, mark your calendar for January and plan to participate in Denver Recycles "TreeCycle" program -- turn your Christmas tree into valuable mulch. Even better, you can pick up your mulch for FREE in the spring. Plus, participating in the program helps the City save money on disposal fees and space in the landfill.

Dumpster service: Place your tree 4 feet away from the dumpster on Monday, January 3rd or Monday, January 9th.

Barrel and manual service: Place your tree out on your normal trash day between January 3rd and 13th.

Call 3-1-1 after April 1st for more information on the "TreeCycle Mulch Giveaway
."

Sanderson Gulch Drainage Improvements
Don't be surprised if you see a large mound of dirt piled up between Vallejo and Tejon near Sanderson Gulch. The Urban Drainage and Flood Control District and City of Denver are preparing for a drainage improvement project that will replace the existing drop structure on Sanderson Gulch with three new drop structures complete with grading work and re-vegetation. Construction will begin in February 2012 and requires the dirt to raise the channel grade. True, this is very early notice, but 1500 cubic yards of soil is sure to stir up some curiosity and a few calls. If you still have questions, contact the District's construction manager, Michael Sarmento, at 303-455-6277.
