Welcome!

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Price And Associates eNewsletter!  I am very excited about launching this new way to keep in touch with our clients, colleagues and friends. Each month we will be sending out a new edition highlighting developments for the Firm, putting a focus on important legal cases in the world of civil rights, and shining a spotlight onto ways that the Firm and our partners are involved in community service.

Our big news is that Price And Associates has recently purchased a new building!  This is the topic of our first feature, which you will find below in the "Monthly Feature" section.

We moved into our new offices at the end of 2010, ready to begin a hopeful 2011, as we renew our dedication to our mission: to provide access to justice and excellent legal services.  This newsletter is part of our effort to strengthen our relationships and  improve our services.  We hope you enjoy it, and we would welcome your feedback.

Best wishes,

Pamela

MONTHLY FEATURE

We've Moved to Our New Offices!

Old Town Square Building at 901 Clay Street in Oakland

For its 20th Anniversary, Price And Associates decided to give itself a very special present: a wonderful new building. Through the Ida B. Wells Holding Company, the Firm became the proud owner of 901 Clay Street in Oakland on December 8, 2010. The spacious and light-filled offices comprise the commercial space of a one-hundred residential unit building, known as "Old Town Square," and situates the Firm in the heart of downtown, in the revitalized "Old Oakland."  After a year and a half search, Pamela is pleased that the acquisition provides the Firm room to grow its professional staff and enhance its services.  Of course, remaining in the Oakland community was paramount, and Price And Associates looks forward to many successful years in this location working for justice while contributing to the continued rebirth of the downtown district.

UPCOMING EVENTS

You're Invited! Come to Our
Open House on March 27, 2011

On Sunday, March 27, 2011, Price And Associates will be hosting an Open House to introduce you to our new offices at 901 Clay Street.

We will open our doors between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. so that Pamela, our attorneys and staff may visit with you, and we can show off our beautiful new home! These offices provide ample space for us to grow as we strive to provide excellent service for our clients.

Refreshments will be served.  Please join us in a celebration of our success!

We planned the Open House to coincide with the Oakland Marathon, which takes place the morning of March 27th.  Last year, Oakland hosted its first marathon in 25 years, the Oakland Running Festival, and the response was incredible -- nearly 6,000 runners participated, including Ms. Price, and streets were lined with well wishers who shared in the excitement.  Another outstanding turnout is expected this year.  The Festival includes a free Running & Fitness Expo at the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel all day on Saturday the 26th. Price And Associates will host a booth at the Expo.
CASE  H IGHLIGHTS
Take Care With Emails At Work

If you are corresponding with your attorney on your company's computer, even through your private email account, be careful -- because your employer may own those emails. It all depends on the employer's policy, says a California appellate court.

In a recent ruling, the court determined that if your employer has a written policy clearly stating that messages sent on the employer's electronic system are not private, then your employer owns that correspondence and has the right to review it. The policy was clear: company computers could only be used for company business and not for personal email. Employees were warned that the company would monitor its computers and at any time had the right to inspect messages and files. Employees were told they had no right to privacy when it came to personal messages or files stored or created on the company computers.

So whether it's a private email conversation with your attorney, or a private email conversation with that special someone, maybe it can wait until you get home!  Holmes v. Petrovich Development Co., LLC, 191 Cal.App.4th 1047, 2011 WL 117230 (Cal.App. 3 Dist.)

Thurgood Marshall Fellowship Highlighted at Annual MLK Luncheon

Pamela Y. Price addressed the MLK Luncheon audience

On Wednesday, January 19, 2011, the Lawyers' Committee For Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area hosted its 24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Marquis in downtown San Francisco.  The always inspiring event attracted some eight-hundred members, advocates and friends to honor nine volunteer attorneys and legal professionals for their dedicated service as civil rights advocates. The stories of these legal professionals and their clients were lessons in courage, perseverance, and commitment to justice.

The program featured a truly outstanding group of speakers, including Kamala Harris, the first woman, African-American, South Asian American Attorney General for the State of California; Hon. Tani Cantil Sakauye, the first woman, Asian American Chief Justice of the State of California; and Keynote Speaker Melinda Haag, United States Attorney for the Northern District of California, and the first woman to hold the position in ninety years.

As Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, Ms. Price took to the podium to highlight the Thurgood Marshall Fellowship, which annually sponsors a young attorney interested in joining the civil rights legal community and committed to fulfilling Justice Marshall's legacy of social justice. The attorneys and staff of Price And Associates, who attended the event with Ms. Price, were proud to see her easily take the stage to give her presentation.  If she is that cool in a courtroom, watch out!
