End of School Year Organizing

It's the end of the school year...

What do you do when your child arrives home with bags overflowing with frayed papers, tattered school supplies and grimy clothes?  Don't panic.

You've learned from the past that if you don't face this situation quickly and aggressively, the clutter will overtake your kitchen table, counters, cabinet and floors; and in due course, travel throughout the house.

Working to sort and organize your child's year-end papers and materials as soon as possible, will save you valuable time, effort and money when the new school year begins.

Following these easy steps now can provide you with a carefree and clutter-free summer.

Easy Strategy to Organize Your Child's School Materials

Gather all school supplies, papers, artwork and projects from the year.

Separate and organized into three categories; "keep", "discard" and "recycle". The "keep" pile can consist of impressive essays, photos, artwork, reflective writing, A+ tests, report cards, notes from teachers and other important pieces that provide a positive snapshot of your child's year at school. You can choose to use sheet protectors to preserve and protect some of these selected items or collect them into smaller folders. Take pictures of artwork or larger projects that are too bulky to store.  School supplies, such as barely used binders, tabs, empty spiral notebooks, writing tools and clean folders can be saved and stored to be used again at the start of the next school year.

Determine where and how you want to save your child's work.  Expandable folders, colorful bins, sturdy file box, over-sized Ziploc bags or other storage containers are all good ideas.  Keeping this in mind, organize the papers (by size, subject or date) and arrange into the designated storage container.  Label clearly with your child's name, grade, age and date.

Store the labeled container in a cool, dry place. Add additional labeled containers each year as your child completes future grades. Not only are you keeping your child's work organized, you are providing a wonderful way for them to reflect back onto their past school years.
