Greetings!

This E-Dispatch is sent to you to keep you informed of the changes affecting the business community of Universal City and North Hollywood.  We value our chamber members and advocate on their behalf with elected officials. Our website contains more information to assist our members: www.noho.org.

National Night Out: August 2

National Night Out Logo

North Hollywood will join with communities nationwide for the 28th annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Local residents and groups will gather at North Hollywood Park, Magnolia at Tujunga, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Major sponsors are the North Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, the Community-Police Advisory Board, and Target Stores. The Chamber will be represented. Music, food and fun are promised, and you can meet the officers who protect our community.

In neighboring Valley Village, residents will meet at 200 Westpark Dr., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

UCNH Chamber is one of the Sponsors for the National Night Out at the North Hollywood Park and will have a booth during the evening.  Stop and check in with the Chamber to see the latest information.

The yearly event, also billed as "America's Night Out Against Crime," aims to increase the spotlight on crime and drug prevention while strengthening ties between police, neighborhood groups and local officials.  The first National Night Out involved 400 communities. Last year, 37 million people in more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide participated in the event.

Social Media for All Levels: August 25

Boost your business with social media. Learn how to use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to reach new customers. Get started on blogging. Develop a strategic social media marketing plan. Market your business with video. Build a productive list.

The novice class from 9 to 11 a.m. will cover the basics of social media. Intermediate training runs from noon to 2 p.m.; and expert training from 3 to 5 p.m. The sessions will be at West Coast University, 12215 Victory Blvd., North Hollywood.

Cost for Chamber members is $20 per class, or $50 for all three. For non-members, cost is $30 per class, or $60 for all three. Membership in any chamber will be verified.

City Controller Wendy Greuel at
July Breakfast
City Controller Wendy Greuel

City Controller Wendy Greuel

City Controller Wendy Greuel, mayoral candidate and our former District 2 City Council member, spoke to a packed room at our July 26 networking breakfast.

The controller discussed many topics, especially the city budget. "City Hall has to ask how do we provide critical services and make sure we are spending tax dollars wisely," she noted. The city needs to bring jobs and to encourage businesses to stay here, Greuel continued. "We need a transportation system that works, not just when they scare everyone off the freeway," she added, referring to Carmageddon.

Mitt Romney in NoHo
Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney

North Hollywood became a presidential campaign stumping ground once again on July 20 as Republican candidate Mitt Romney spoke at the Valley Plaza Shopping Center, home to the Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

The former governor of Massachusetts drew a small crowd and media coverage as he used the backdrop of the mostly vacant shopping center to criticize President Obama's economic policies. He commented that Valley Plaza is no longer the bustling business it was in the 1960s when John F. Kennedy visited.

Our own chamber president, local officials and many residents took issue with Romney's choice of venue for his rally. Said City Councilmember Paul Krekorian, representing the Second District: "For Mr. Romney, Valley Plaza is just an easy backdrop for a cheap photo op. For the people I represent, it is a glaring testament to the failed policies and economic collapse that led to its demise during the eight years of the Bush Administration."

Chamber president Vic Viereck elaborated. "There's more to Valley Plaza than just the national situation," Viereck told the website TPMDC. "There were other things involved and it was not a thriving plaza before the economic collapse. It was more the earthquake [of 1994] that -- I hate to say -- shook things up." He added that government red tape also slowed earlier efforts to redevelop the site. On the positive side in revitalizing NoHo, Viereck pointed to the Dasher-Lawless project on Victory Boulevard, between Coldwater and Fulton, on the north side of Victory. "It's all private capital," he emphasized.

The current owner of Valley Plaza, iStar, said the company is designing a project there that would be an "economic engine for North Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley."

Big Turnout for L.A.'s Largest Mixer

The UCNH Chamber had an excellent response at our booth at L.A.'s Largest Mixer  July 21 at the Shrine Auditorium Expo Center.

This is an annual event for us, and we had great participation of our own members, who had a chance to network with hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of business people..

President's Update: Trillions in Debt

By Victor N. Viereck, CPA

President, UCNH Chamber

Vic ViereckMembers of the Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce partake in and enjoy a variety of activities through the Chamber.

We recently enjoyed and benefited from participating and enjoying L.A.'s Largest Mixer on July 21, and the first annual United Chambers of Commerce mixer on June 30, which drew over 500 people. Our great monthly breakfast mixer last week combined networking with meeting and hearing Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel. It was interesting to hear what she had to say, and to network with each other.

Considering that Chambers of Commerce certainly involve their members in politics at the local, state, and federal levels, it's certainly important to know about and advocate regarding issues, particularly at this time, the national debt.

The United States national debt is about $14.3 trillion, and for some politicians that's not enough. They want to keep intoxicating people with unaffordable (to the taxpayers) benefits. The intoxication is an intentional means for some politicians to stay in power. It takes a lot of courage to speak out and take an effective stand against the intoxication. But failure to do so will lead to fiscal disaster.
