Welcome to the first edition of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges' (AAVMC) new governmental affairs messaging service. This will provide you with important announcements about the association's activities in Washington as well as pertinent Federal Register notices and calls to action. The association plans to send these messages as needed in response to breaking news or legislative developments.
Our first announcement is a Federal Register notice for input on one of our top priorities -- the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP). Under this program, veterinarians agree to provide, for a specific period of time, services in areas with an identified shortage of veterinarians. As part of the stakeholder input process, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is inviting comments regarding the VMLRP's current procedures and processes. Input collected will be used to modify and improve processes for subsequent calls of shortage situation nominations and request for applications.
You can view the solicitation, which appeared in the Federal Register (76 FR 68126, November 3, 2011), here.
Please join us in making our voices heard on this important issue. AAVMC encourages members to submit feedback directly to the USDA. Also, it is very important for the AAVMC to provide comments as an association, so it would be helpful if you would send me a copy of your response. Please note that I need this input by Friday, Dec. 2, 2011.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or suggestions for what you would like to see in future messages.
