Surfboards as learning tools?
| |
Dear Parents and OLF Families,
Our nurturing learning environment is a "nest" for innovation and technology by young OLF Falcons. When you ask our junior high student Katharina Shultz how she applies her acquired 21st Century skills, she will point to a surfboard! A surfboard? What does a surfboard have to do with learning in the classroom you ask?
Over the past year, our students in Mrs. Iyer's science class have researched and synthesized scientific information they had gathered and tested. Within a beach community like San Clemente, it is no surprise that Katharina had decided to test buoyancy and performance of various surfboards to demonstrate all that she has learned so far at OLF:
- scientific research
- model replica
- critical thinking
- verbal and written communication of content
- planning and organization of resources
- application of the scientific method
- effective analysis to minimize costs of testing
- visual communication of results
The long list of applied skills our young scientist used in one assignment is as large as all the content lessons that were integrated. Katharina was courageous and confident that her product testing had value to the rest of the world, and presented her findings at the OC Science Fair.
She was right "on target" with the quality of her research and the interest of others in her work, and was recognized with an Honorable Mention for her "product testing" she had contributed to the local and global surfing communities. Congratulations to our young scientist and product tester!
Blessings,
Mrs. Beate Nguyen, M.A. Ed.,
Principal
