40 days during Lent....

Dear Parents and OLF Families,

During his homily on Ash Wednesday, Father Paul explained to the children the meaning of Lent. With his usual smile, he mentioned how hard it can be to "give up something" and maintain a commitment. It is challenging, he elaborated to work on our own habits with the aim of treating everyone the way Jesus would.

It is not easy as a child to grasp the concept of self-control and self-discipline. Many times our children are used to being told "do this or that" or "do not to touch this" and "look out for that"... We ask them to listen to our instructions and to abide by the rules, using positive reinforcement and discipline, if necessary. Rarely do we raise the bar of expectation to where we ask our children to set their own parameters. Yet during Lent, this is exactly what we do. Suddenly it is between God and you!....

For most children, 40 days of self-control seem like a very long time! Being asked to suddenly "monitor one's own decisions" can be challenging. But we should  not underestimate our child's ability to discern his or her own actions.

When we, as parents and primary educators, model this good behavior, our children gain valuable insights in how to deal with self-discipline and self-improvement. It's o.k. to discuss struggles and tribulations with our children, allowing them to witness that solutions don't always come in ready-made portions! As we try to come closer to God each and every day, we work hard at it, alert and intentional, sometimes succeeding, sometimes stumbling, but always picking ourselves up and truly believing that with God's help we can do better!

Blessings,

Mrs. Beate Nguyen, M.A. Ed.,

Principal
