Educating students

Success comes from....?
| |
Dear Parents and OLF Families,
In a recent article of Education Week, David Ginsburg discussed how "traditional teaching methods often deny students the chance to learn from their mistakes by preventing them from making mistakes." He goes on to say, that "it's common knowledge that people can learn as much from their mistakes as anything".
We can't help but smile about the accompanying quote to this article, which shines a light on the essence of 21st Century inquiry-based learning:
"I have not failed.
I've just found 10,000 ways
that don't work."
Thomas A. Edison

As educators and parents, we know how painful "failure" can be through personal life experiences. When it comes to our children, we try so hard, and at all cost, to protect them from experiencing any failure. It hurts us more to see our children fail, than if we fail ourselves! Because we love them so much, we absolutely want the best for them! Our parental instincts tell us that we need to protect them.
While this is of course valid, we must also be careful that we prepare them to be able to cope with difficult and complex situations. Sometimes in life the answers are not ready-made! Sometimes it takes even a genius multiple attempts to find the right solution! Sometimes it is the knowledge that we can do even better that drives us to lasting success!
Learning to recognize life's opportunities and to solve the world's challenges, is very much like the toddler who learns to walk. Unless there are a few minor bandages on the knees, we probably won't be ready to run a marathon very soon! It takes practice to solve your multiplication problems, practice to shoot hoops, practice to learn playing the violin and practice to cope with disappointing moments.
As educators and parents, it is our responsibility to ensure that our students feel loved and appreciated for the amazing "gift" they are. Whether they made the sports team or not, whether they aced the test or not, whether they accidentally broke their fragile science project or not. We guide our children with high expectations, we reassure them with our kind words, we encourage them to try and reach further each day. By sharpening their senses and skills through trial and error, our little "falcons" are getting ready to soar to unprecedented heights!
Blessings,
Mrs. Beate Nguyen, M.A. Ed., Principal

Precious gifts brought by the wise men and women!
| |
Could it be? Is it true?
First, McGowan Hall at Christmas! Now the "wise men and women" brought us gifts as precious as gold! Today, our school took delivery of 50 donated computers, flat-screen monitors, keyboards and mice!
How are we so blessed?
Thanks to PIMCO (Pacific Investment Management Company) of Newport Beach, OLF Parish School is the lucky recipient of this wonderful donation! These computers will be put to use in the classrooms to benefit all students! A special thank you goes to Linda Alves for securing the donation from the foundation over the past months. Thank you also to our Tech Angel, Brian Marquez for assisting Linda with the accurate assessment of technical specifications! Thank you to Patrick Goodreau and James Alves for joining our "SUV convoy" to organize the pick-up and delivery of the precious cargo! Thank you to Dustin Slater from Beyond Technology for his courage to get this set up a.s.a.p. with the help of other Tech Angels! Truly a team effort!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Mandarin Chinese - New Elective for Trimester II
| Last Trimester we briefly surveyed our parents, so see if they thought we should be adding Mandarin Chinese to our electives, and we had some favorable responses. This time we asked our 7th and 8th Grade students if they would like to learn an additional foreign language, and there was a resounding "yes"!
As a result, we are happy to announce that for the second Trimester, effective January 9th, we will pilot the elective of Mandarin Chinese. The instruction will be donated by one of our parent volunteer, Mrs. Andrea Ding-Kemp, who has offered her instruction free of charge.
Mrs. Kemp has worked at the Chinese Studies Program, University of California, San Diego, where she received her Master of Pacific International Affairs. Mrs. Kemp also holds her BS in Mechanical Engineering; BA in Technical Editing from Tsinghua University Beijing, China. We are very blessed to have many talented professionals, such as Mrs. Kemp in our wonderful OLF learning community. Thank you for enriching our children's learning experience with 21st Century skills!
