"Life-long learners" - educators included! | |
Dear Parents and OLF families,
When we talk about our OLF Schoolwide Learning Expectations or SLEs, we usually think of our students, and what we expect them to learn or demonstrate upon 8th Grade graduation. Not so fast! Schoolwide Learning Expectations are exactly what they say - schoolwide. This is in line with the shifting paradigm of pedagogy that demands that our schools in the 21st Century are more of a learning community that consists of students, teachers, staff and parents.
Gone are the days, when schools where an institution of learning exclusively for students. Gone are the days, when teachers could rely on their acquired knowledge for the rest of their lives. Gone are the days, when parents are on the sidelines, watching their children learn from a distance. Teachers, staff and parents are included in the expectation of being a life-long learner. The building of new and relevant knowledge is a dynamic and collaborative effort that models essential skills our children will need for their successful future.
An effective educators identifies new facts and information, integrates current educational resources, and monitors popular trends on a continuous basis. Driven by new technology gadgets and research-based inquiry, professional development for teachers is an essential ingredient for successful instruction and balanced growth of our students. Over the past ten weeks, our teachers have already been exposed to various topics, including professional development on dyslexia, the new Roman Missal, and technology integration.
This week, over 600 educators within the Diocese of Orange are attending an in-service that uncovers curricular mapping as the next, new frontier for our school's action plan. Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs is the "guru" of curricular mapping and a world-renowned speaker. I was blessed to work with her over the summer in Boston. She is progressive, demanding and absolutely critical of institutional stagnation. We are looking forward to a productive event for all OLF teachers, a.k.a. "life-long learners".

With Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs at a National Conference in Boston, July 2011
