Growing "greener" everyday!

grand opening for grass

Dear Parents and OLF families,

Last Friday, on a beautiful morning after School Mass, our children joined Father Jack and Ron Runolfson, OLF Parish Business Manager, for the grand opening of the grass field!  After a brief acknowledgement by the children, Father Jack, Ron and myself had the honor of cutting the yellow construction ribbon! This  was a  wonderful accomplishment for  our entire community. The Parish continues to be very supportive of our school and as a school we are beginning to reciprocate this collaboration at numerous levels.

  Run on grass field

The grass field was a "wish" for many years for all parents and students, alike. Now our students are able to run and play, sit and read in an outdoor classroom setting, or compete in field games during Physical Education classes. Gone are the days of fences and wishful thinking! Now that this is accomplished, we all  must take ownership in maintaining our school campus and our Parish property.

Our OLF Green Team is working hard to encourage everyone to clean up after themselves. The Green Team (part of the OLF Ambassadors) has two main purposes:

  1. Promote OLF pride by maintaining our campus grounds and a clean school environment
  2. Assist with overall environmental stewardship (recycling, public awareness, etc.)

Our students are currently working with Mr. Lenahan to  evaluate how we can become more "green" as a school. Environmental stewardship is definitely part of our Catholic faith and falls within the  Schoolwide Learning Expectations. God calls us to  take care of the land and all the creatures which He created.

Our next target area for improvement is our "Secret Garden" located behind the MAP classroom and "Fatima's Grotto." This area needs some extra help! Our dream is to have a "green house" with a solar energy panel to have children "grow green stuff" and learn responsibility in nurturing and gardening. This would also enable our science classes to learn about genetics hands-on.

If you would like to share your "green thumb" or "eco-expertise" to help us develop this dream, please let me know! We need to develop a plan, before we can start digging!
