 Praying the Rosary

Dear parents and OLF families,

October is a special month at Our Lady of Fatima School, as our students learn how to pray the rosary. Holding the beads in their hands, students assemble for morning prayer in the Falcon's Quad to reflect on the mysteries.

In the 16th Century, Pope Pius V standardized three sets of mysteries: The joyful mysteries, the sorrowful mysteries and the glorious  mysteries. Then, in the 21st Century, Pope John Paul II added the luminous mysteries. By praying the rosary our students recall the life of Jesus Christ. Exposure to this beautiful devotion reminds us all  that Our Lady of Fatima holds a very special place in our hearts.

On October 7, we will have our School Mass on the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Rosary. This will be followed on October 17th by a Candle Light Procession.  Candle light procession 2011 That evening, all parents, children and parishioners  are invited to join our students in prayer on campus.

STUDENT-LED REVIEWS      OCTOBER 27-28, 2011

October is special for another reason as well. This is the month when we hold our parent-teacher conferences to inform you of your child's growth. The format OLF uses is a student-led approach, allowing the child to demonstrate his or her knowledge and understanding to the parents/guardians.

This year, following various discussions with the faculty, it was decided to continue the student-led reviews for Grades 3-8. For the primary grades however, teachers decided that the focus should be on communicating directly with the parents.

Therefore, students in Grades MAP through Grade 2 will not be leading the conferences. Sign-up sheet for conference days will be posted beginning Monday, October 10th, outside the school office. Please ensure that you sign up for your 15 minute review for every OLF student in your family, or for all of your child's teachers. Sign-ups are on a first come-first serve basis!

OLF IN THE NEWS!

The OC Register Section, Sun Post News, had a brief article about OLF in the newspaper on October 1, 2011. Here is the link to the article:

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/san-319744-clemente-local.html

A representative of the City of San Clemente wrote to us: "Thank you for participating in San Clemente's Coastal Cleanup Day!  It was a huge success.  The official data is in and we had over 210 volunteers who collected 244 pounds of trash and 19 pounds of recycled material from 3.5 miles of San Clemente's coastline!  The largest amount of debris was in the form of cigarette butts - 981 butts collected. We will present all of the data in our next e-newsletter".

Field Trip Task Force Update
bear
Our first meeting was held this week.  The following members were present to express various perspectives and input: Mr. Daehnke, Mrs. Senske, Mr. Dolan and Mrs. Nguyen.  Members of the task force agreed that OLF field trips:
  1. Strengthen curricular and schoolwide expectations
  2. Add value to the overall educational experience for our students
  3. Should continue with the same overall focus  on student learning

The main concern is to ensure that the transportation questions are resolved quickly, in order to guarantee:

  1. Utmost safety for all students, faculty and chaperones
  2. That volunteer drivers and OLF are not exposed to liability
  3. That field trips remain affordable
  4. A realistic solution that is acceptable to the majority of parents and the school.

Members of the Task force are currently gathering information to determine various options, and to find the best solution. If you still wish to contribute your input, please contact any member of the task force or e-mail Mrs. Nguyen at bnguyen@olfschool.net
