Dear OLF Family and Friends, | |

I can't believe that October is coming to an end. We hope you will join us for our all new "Trunk or Treat" on Wednesday, October 27 at 2:15. If you are planning to attend, please park in front of the church, by the parish offices, or by the sports court. It should be a fun-filled day for everyone. All costumes need to be Catholic school appropriate. No masks, props, painted faces, spaghetti straps, or clothing shorter than 4 inches above the knee, or scary costumes. They need to be comfortable and able to be worn during the entire school day.

Please join us for our Veteran's Day Prayer Service on Thursday, November 11 at 8:00 AM with special guests from the Camp Pendleton USMC battalion of 2/4. They will provide our color guard. We hope you will be able to join us for this wonderful tradition at OLF and we invite all our active and retired family members to join us in uniform that day so we may celebrate you.
Many Blessings, Mrs. Tipton |

| FAM Hunger Walk | The 23rd annual Hunger Walk that supports the work of Family Assistance Ministries will be held on Sunday, October 24th, at the San Clemente Community Center at the corner of Del Mar and Seville. Registration begins at 1:00 p.m. and the walk ends at 2:00 p.m. Students in 7th and 8th grades can earn service points by gathering sponsors and participating in this event. We hope to see many OLF families participating in this most important fundraiser. If your family is unable to participate, please support all the faculty and staff by placing your pledge in the donor envelope that will be outside the school office during the coming weeks. All the funds raised during the walk support the work of FAM as they help local individuals and families in need. You will find a flyer and donor sheet in the attachments with this newsletter. |

| More Information On Student Led Reviews.... | |
STUDENT LED REVIEWS: Thursday, October 28 ONLY.
Continued from last week....
The student-led process typically is recognized as three phases: preparation, the actual review, and an evaluation.
Preparation. It cannot be assumed that all students will possess the self-confidence, organizational skills, and communication skills necessary to lead a successful review. Therefore, teachers must adequately prepare students and provide them with the skills and tools needed. In the week prior to the conference, our teachers will instruct students how to lead the review, assist them with collecting and preparing information to be shared with parents, and describe how to explain and interpret any information to be shared. When students become actively involved, they will be motivated to improve their academic performance.
The Review. The student is in charge of the review and is now adequately prepared to assume this responsibility. There will be three two reviews taking place in the homeroom simultaneously, with the teacher moving freely from family to family and spending only a few minutes with each group.
Discussion of academic grades is typically the primary focus of the student-led parent review, but the review also provides an excellent opportunity for students to share the contents of their portfolios and to explain why each work sample was selected for inclusion. Additionally, the review agenda may include discussion of artifacts that help explain grades (such as test and homework scores, homework assignments and student projects, and records of class attendance, class participation, and the number and types of missing assignments) and discussion of self-selected academic and social goals for the upcoming term.
The review format should be envisioned as a process, rather than as an event. All OLF teachers are participating in on-going communication with the parents. Communication takes place via the Teacher Webs, Gradelink, e-mail, and scheduling conferences as needed. It is our hope that all concerns are being addressed as they arise and are not being held until the student-led parent review.
Evaluation. Following the review, the students, parents, and teachers will be given an opportunity to provide their feedback concerning the effectiveness of the student-led format. This feedback is essential so that OLF can continue to fine-tune the review model and can be responsive to the expressed needs of students and parents. |
