Greetings!
School's Out, School's Out
Well, almost. Most of us will be wrapping up the 2011-2012 school year within the next few weeks, some perhaps within the next week. It has been a long, tough year, but rewarding in that we, along with our partners, defeated the unfair SB 5/Issue 2. Although we will get a much deserved rest from shool work, the work of continuing to fight SB 5 must continue. Kasich and his supporters in the legislature continue to nickel and dime SB 5 provisions into other laws under consideration and yet to be proposed. Other anti-public education measures and budget cuts are being proposed at the Federal level, as well. This issue offers several opportunities to get involved with Campaign 2012 in whatever way you feel comfortable with. A collective, collaborative effort worked with Issue 2. Let us continue that work in Campaign 2012.

SEOEA RA Report from Pam Smith
Nearly 70 delegates and guests attended the Capital District Representative Assembly (RA) on Apr.17. The Southeastern -OEA District is one of the oldest of the Ohio Education Association's ten geographical districts. The District provides a variety of services to members including professional development opportunities.
At the RA, Jim Wilhelm (Alexander) was elected President, and Bill Van Pelt (Belpre) was elected Vice President. Outgoing President, Jane Miller (Buckeye Hills) and Vice President, Pam Smith (Jackson City) were both term limited. Susan Haggerty was elected as an At-Large member of the SEOEA Executive Committee. Delegates also voted to endorse Tim Myers for Secretary-Treasurer of OEA in the upcoming election at the Spring OEA Representative Assembly. In the uncontested OEA races, the SEOEA delegates endorsed Andre Taylor for NEA Director #5, Jerry Oberhaus for NEA Director #6 and CEA member Robin Jeffries for Board of Directors At-Large.
State Representative Debbie Phillips (Athens) received the Friend of Education Award. Phillips is currently serving her second term representing the 92nd House District and has been involved in the issue of School Funding for many years. She opposed Senate Bill 5 and worked to help defeat Issue 2 last November. She has long been a true Friend to Public Education.
President Jane Miller was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Miller has served for the past 15 years as President of SEOEA and has been a longtime President for the Buckeye Hills Teachers Association.
Locals who received the SEOEA Pacesetter Award were Alexander, Belpre, Fort Frye, Jackson, Morgan, Trimble, Warren, and Wellston. Each local received a certificate and a $100 stipend for participating in activities sponsored by SEOEA.
SEOEA delegates voted to support one new business item at the OEA Representative Assembly: A recommendation by OEA's Charter School Task Force to organize teachers in charter schools, and to oppose a one-time $22 dues assessment to help fund the Voters First petition drive. |

Campaign 2012 - OEA ACES Meeting in Athens
We cannot let anti-public education politicians in Columbus continue to dictate policies that impact you and your students. It is time that education professionals stand together and demand a change. By supporting initiatives to give power back to Ohio voters and working to elect pro-public education candidates this November, we will make that change.
On Wednesday, May 16 2012, OEA member leaders and activists in your area are coming together to find out how they can make a difference in November and volunteer for OEA's Campaign 2012. We encourage you join them as they discuss Campaign 2012 and how you can participate.
Details for the event are as follows: Where: Ohio University Inn 331 Richland Avenue Athens OH, 45701 When: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 4:30pm - 7:00pm (Dinner will be provided at 4:30 pm and the program will begin at 5:00 pm)
The only way OEA can make a difference this election is if education professionals stand together and make a difference during the November 2012 election. We will need members like you, who helped defend public education by defeating Issue 2 last year, to help lay the foundation for victory in 2012.
