Greetings!
Spring is Upon Us?
Wow! Who can believe the unusually warm winter this year? Hopefully, we will not get slammed with some heavy spring snows and we'll have a chance to finish the year on time with no make-up days.
Speaking of spring, don't forget to register for the SEOEA Spring Issues Conference to be held Saturday, March 3 at the Ohio University Inn in Athens. Registration information may be found in a separate section of this newsletter. Now that Issue 2 has been defeated and we've had a chance to catch our breath, this conference will take a look at additional issues that will continue to demand our attention. Please attend for this important information and take it back to share with your members.
Also, don't forget to put the SEOEA Spring Representative Assembly on your calendar, Tuesday, April 17 5:30 PM at Westview Elementary School in Jackson.

Current Legislative Issues
The OEA Executive Board is watching several issues in the works at the Statehouse.
Right to Work legislation has been proposed in several states and some RTW provisions from SB 5 are being considered for insertion in other legislation. In particular, there are proposals to eliminate contract provisions that require an employee to join a union. The board heard a summary of a study on the the effects of such provisions found in other states and it found that wages and benefits in such states are actually lower, additional jobs are not created by them and they place more money at top levels. This may actually be a ballot issue in 2013.
Despite the need, it is not anticipated that any legislative action on fixing issues with the state retirement systems will occur soon. It is possible the Senate may consider legislation during the spring at the earliest. Most likely nothing will actually happen till summer.
OEA is unanimously in support of a ballot initiative regarding fair and balanced redistricting in Ohio rather than being partisan. Watch for petitions to place this issue on the ballot. More information may be found at http://www.votersfirstohio.org or http://www.drawtheline.org. |
