SEOEA e-Pad Update

(Vol 1, Issue 9)

Greetings!

From the OEA ACES Center:

We just received word that the House Committee on Commerce & Labor has scheduled a possible vote on Senate Bill 5 for Tuesday. If the bill passes the House Committee, it could be brought to the floor of the House for a vote of the full chamber very quickly.

After three weeks of building and demonstrating public opposition to SB5 throughout Ohio, and especially in the districts of key Representatives, it's time to converge on Columbus this Tuesday, March 29, 2011 for a coalition-wide rally. The community organizing efforts of OEA members, like you, have moved a handful of Republicans to oppose the bill and more are now undecided or leaning against it, putting the outcome in doubt.

We have a Lobby Day already scheduled to start at 9 am Tuesday, so if you are planning to attend, please RSVP here so that we know to expect you and are ready with materials. Meeting personally with your State Representative is the best and most powerful way to send the message that our communities are opposed to SB5 because it hurts students and the middle-class.

If you can't make it during the day on Tuesday, please plan to come after school. As in previous rallies, we ask that you stop by the OEA first (225 E. Broad St) to get the latest information, pick up signs and help us report to the media the strongest possible turnout number. Click here to let us know that you are planning to come after school Tuesday. We expect the after-school portion of the day to go until about 6 pm.

The latest OEA Legislative Watch can be viewed here.  This updates several of the currently being considered bills that will impact public education and public employees.

HOW YOU CAN BOYCOTT THE KOCH BROTHERS......

The backlash against the Koch Brother's influence in the Wisconsin (and other states) labor bargaining issue is gaining steam with labor supporters starting to boycott Koch Industries' many products, some of which are listed below. If you wish to participate, send a part of the wrapper of the product you bought to the Koch Brother's company so they know you bought a "competing" product. It is as easy as making copies of this and then attaching the label(s) to this and mailing it to: Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products, 133 Peachtree St., N.E. Atlanta, GA 30303.....OR just don't buy their products!!!

This is a partial list.....Angel Soft toilet paper Brawny paper towels Dixie plates, bowls, napkins and cups Mardi Gras napkins and towels Quilted Norther toilet paper Soft'n Gentle toilet paper producst and envelopes Any Georgia-Pacific product

From Armond Burdish on HB 159

This is the response of a House Republican leader when asked why they were ramming through HB 159, a modern day "poll tax" that attacks the voting rights of the poor, minorities, seniors, and young adults.

If passed, Ohio would become only the third state to impose such restrictive government photo ID requirements to vote.

Plain and simple, HB 159 is a Republican power grab to stop Democratic voters from participating. Multiple studies show that it will prevent minorities, the poor, the elderly, and college-age students from voting, since they are least likely to have a government-issued photo ID.

We must stop this radical, shameful bill from becoming law. Please help Ohio House Democrats fight like hell against Republican efforts to turn back years of progress in Ohio.

House Republicans are also on the cusp of passing Senate Bill 5, which is a vicious attack on the rights of middle class workers. As we prepare to defend working families at the voting booth, House Republicans are now deliberately trying to take away thousands of Democrats right to vote.

Do you think SB 5 and HB 159 are related?

Ohio House Democrats are Fighting Like Hell to make sure we stop Republicans radical, partisan, anti-middle class agenda. But we need your help.

Here are four simple steps you can take to help right now:

1.     Donate $5 to stop HB 159 and Senate Bill 5.

2.     Sign an on-line petition.

3.     Write a letter to the editor to your local paper telling voters why the Radical Republican agenda is wrong in Ohio.

4.     Forward this email to 5 friends and ask them to help.

Thanks for your help and support,

Armond Burdish

House Minority Leader

As Kasich's poll numbers drop will FreedomWorks $5.6 million bail him out?

The efforts by anti-public education politicians to silence your voice in how our schools operate and cutting over $3 billion from education funding in the next two years are proving to be unpopular.

According to an article in today's Columbus Dispatch:

"Ohio voters disapprove of Gov. John Kasich's performance.

They don't like his push to gut collective bargaining for public employees.

The budget he rolled out last week is regarded as unfair.

His plan to sell several Ohio prisons gets thumbs down, too.

A new poll today -- the first since Kasich unveiled his $55.5 billion two-year budget  -- by Quinnipiac University contains almost no good news for Kasich, a Republican who took office a little more than two months ago."

Now, we have to ensure that we're continuing the fight for our students, our colleagues and our communities.  A national anti-worker front group is planning to spend $5.6 million, starting in Ohio, attacking educators, fire-fighters, police officers and the working people of Ohio and pushing for a Wisconsin-style gutting of collective bargaining rights.

We know this is a long-term struggle for the direction of Ohio's schools and economy. A key part is ensuring that we stand up for our allies, and we replace anti-public education legislators with those who respect and value the work you do every day. Your contribution today sends a powerful message that you care about protecting collective bargaining rights and education funding.

The teachers and education support professionals of the OEA have sent over 53,000 emails and tens of thousands have attended rallies in Columbus and in over 20 other locations around the state. Thousands more have called their elected officials on our Educator Connector line (888-907-7309) and efforts to pressure State House members in their home districts are continuing daily around the state.

As we all fight the battles to stop these destructive pieces of legislation, we need to remember that the way to win on these issues in the future is to elect legislators who care about students and educators. If the current State Senators and Representatives see that you are already contributing to the next election fight, it will give them additional pause when they consider whether to stand with you. Contribute now to be a part of this fight.
