| Featured Pets of the Month | |  Hershey-Came to TAPS 3/20/2010
Hershey is a big, strong, lovable 10 year old chocolate lab mix. He can sit, lay down, and shake on command. He gets along with cats and kids but needs to be the only dog in the house. Hershey is a easy walking, very lovable boy who has a big heart and would like nothing more than a home of his own and a loving family to spend the rest of his life with. Come and visit with Hershey. Sami - Came to TAPS 5/27/2010. Sammi is a large, very sweet tuxedo kitty who is looking for a new home. She was adopted 10 years ago as a baby, but her family was moving and could not take her with. Sammi is de-clawed (if that matters), VERY affectionate and loves to sit in your lap and purr while being petted. Sammi is playful and tolerates other cats (but would prefer to all the attention to herself). Sammi's foster Mom reports that she is very tidy, always uses the litter box and is eagerly awaits attention. Sammi would be perfect for a quiet home and will gladly keep your lap warm. Please call the shelter to schedule an appointment to visit Sammi.

TAPS Volunteer of The Month:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ October Volunteer of the Month - yet to be announced
September- Brenda Johnson
Brenda has been volunteering at TAPS since March 2010. A
lifelong animal lover, it was only after she
retired from Caterpillar Inc. that she was able
to realize her dream of volunteering. She especially enjoys working with
the large dogs and spending time walking, grooming, training and interacting
with them. August- Phyllis Parker
Phyllis has volunteered at
TAPS for over 5 years. After she retired from the medical field she decided to
spend some time with the animals. She started by walking dogs and soon
graduated to helping in the office. Phyllis greets visitors, answers the
phones, and helps with adoptions. She also brings homemade treats for the Staff
and Volunteers to enjoy. We hope to see Phyllis in the office for years to
come.July- Sharon
Harris Sharon started volunteering in
January 2009 after losing her husband. She began by walking dogs and helping
with offsite events. She then became an Adoption Counselor and helps at the
front desk. Sharon
enjoys spending time with the animals and even adopted Harris, a Pomeranian. Lee came to TAPS when he was
looking for a new dog after his beloved Tucker passed away. He fell in love
with, and adopted, a beagle named Willy. Lee wanted to help TAPS find new homes
for the animals, so he started volunteering in the office. He says that it was
something he always wanted to do but didn't have the time before.
Food for thought...
October is adopt a shelter dog month, and we are hoping this leads to many, adoptions for our dogs awaiting their forever homes. Our selection of dogs is constantly changing and we have dogs of all sizes and breeds (see website). Please consider giving a home to one of the "longtime" TAPS dogs - those who have been at TAPS 6 months or longer ... they are often older like Hershey, or perhaps do not get along with pets, but do wonderful with people and have so much love to give.
TAPS recently received a grant from the Community Foundation of Central Illinois for $3,000.00 to provide spay and neuter services and medical care for families facing financial hardship. Upon receiving this grant, an announcement was made in the Pekin Daily Times and on our website - TAPS was immediately flooded with applications. In total we were able to help alter (spay or neuter) 59 pets - 40 of which also needed their rabies vaccination, and provide needed medical care for 6 other pets. What a blessing this was to many area residents. We will be able to apply next year for the same grant and actively search for other spay/neuter grants. While there is a greater need than the grant was able to provide for, every pet altered makes a difference.
As Mentioned in last month's e-greeting, it has been a slow summer for adoptions - overall we have had 20% fewer adoptions than this time last year. This fact impacts TAPS financially, as well as how we can help the animals and meet the needs of people in our community.
Please continue the support of TAPS through your time (volunteering), donations, and taking part in our annual and off-site events, we would not be here without your help and support!
Tailwaggers' Classic Dog Walk - Sept. 26th (1-5 PM) @ Mineral Springs Park- Royal Ave. Pavilion
|
|
"Fun for the Whole Family!"Tailwagger's is TAPS longest running fundraising event, and
is always a great time for the whole family - this year was no exception. Tailwaggers was well attended, and had 20 vendors offering pet related goods and services, as well as a few for the pet's family. Everyone enjoyed the variety of demonstrations. Clyde the Bloodhound (from Peoria County) was a and big hit and the sheep and duck herding Border Collie's of Maxwell Orvill had the crowds in awe of their abilities. It was amazing to see all the dogs in action - each displaying a unique talent or skill which they use on the job. What an amazing group of canines!
Tickles the clown and Red Ruff the kept everyone in smiles and the kids seemed to enjoy making some neat crafts. After the dog walk, we drew names for the many raffle prizes to be given away. This years items ranged from pet beds and dog supply baskets to overnight and event gift certificates to a variety of attractions. Winning the airline tickets to LasVegas was the highlight of one participants day, and our youth grand prize winner of the family event package to area attractions was all smiles. Overall this was a fun afternoon event which was a made
possible by the efforts of so many. TAPS greatly appreciates the support
of our many business sponsors, volunteers and staff, and to everyone who
attended Tailwaggers - making it a successful event, which brought in some desperately needed operational funds.
