DECEMBER 2011

| Greetings! |
I hope this finds you well and not too-stuffed after a great Thanksgiving holiday.
While you digest between now and the next round of holidays, it's easy to get distracted and off track with your goals. For so many inventors, that means the progress on our project gets slowed. A good way to keep the momentum going is to stay in touch and motivated at our meetings and workshops.
That said, you'll want to check out the information in this month's newsletter below.
You won't want to miss this month's CKIC free open meeting, as we hear from Len Heller, Vice President with the the UK Office for Commercialization and Economic Development. He will be talking to us about UK's perspective on the America Invents Act.
If you've been with us for any length of time here at the CKIC, you've probably heard the phrase "Nobody Wants to Dance with the Wallflowers". Well, we're talking about it - check it out on this month's blog at http://www.ckic.org/inventorblog.html.
Have a great week, and I'll be looking for you at our Free Open Meeting on Tuesday December 6th!
Best Regards,
Don Skaggs President Central Kentucky Inventors Council |

Marketing Tips From Sara Blakely and Barbara Corcoran
|
At a recent Woman's Summit put on by Inc. Magazine, entrepreneur Barbara Corcoran (right), along with the Inventor and founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely (left), divulged their similar tips on sales, despite their different personal styles:
Great Salespeople Never Give Up - Both of these highly successful female entrepreneurs are true salespeople, never stopping in the face of naysayers and adversity. From lawyers who didn't think she had a unique invention to manufacturers who refused to talk with her, Blakely stubbornly refused to give up on her idea to literally change the shape of women's hosiery. Create Your Own Demand - Blakely bought her own stands from Target, and went around manually placing Spanx at the cash register at neiman Marcus. Everyone thought someone else had put the product there, and her guerilla tactics helped her get noticed. Take Risks - Both women have a reality TV background with Blakely appearing on American Inventor. She believed in her product so much she jumped on a plane to sell the Spanx line to Nieman Marcus with just the promise of a 10-minute meeting. After showing the woman her Spanx in the bathroom, she made the sale. Perception Creates Reality - "Visualize: know where you want to be," says Blakely. "Think of a different life for yourself, and visualize what you want. Take a mental snapshot of where you want to be. I did it at 20 years old, picturing myself on the Oprah show. The next 15 years of my life were filling in the blanks." |
