Shelley Heckles

What horse changed your career?

My mare Searrianna got me back into competing full time after college. She made me realize this was what I wanted to do full time. Even though she had no eventing experience when I bought her, her boldness and honesty over the cross country made it very enjoyable. She is now semi-retired after many successful years together.

Can you tell us about your pre-competition routine and/or rituals?

My pre competition routine consists of going over a checklist about 10 times making sure everything is in the trailer. Including making sure all my pink/navy gear is color coordinating, and the lucky socks!

What's the best advice you have for riders who want to increase their riding skills and horsemanship?

You have to stay dedicated, and keep going in the right direction. Many people get discouraged and don't think they will ever reach their goals. You have to look at where other people came from, and see how far they got today. Everyone has hard times, but it's the people who never quit that are the ones who are successful.

What is your educational background?

I went to college at Penn State studying business management.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

To fly or be invincible

Last book read?

Eventing magazine!

If you weren't a professional event rider, what would you be?

Very Very bored... I could not see myself doing anything else.

Which phase do you like most and why?

The cross country, because the adrenaline is amazing and when you have a great ride there could not be a better feeling in the world.

When and why did you decide to turn professional?

I decided to make this a profession because I truly love what I do. I say that when you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.

How did your family respond to your decision to ride horses professionally?

They always supported be 100%. They knew growing up that this was my goal, however my grandmother always wanted me to take up bowling instead.

Which horseman/horsewoman has been the most influential in your own development or career?

Cherie Gaebel has been a huge influence in my eventing career. She has helped me through many different challenges that I have had with myself and kept me on the right path toward riding correctly and successfully.

What motto best describes you?

Patience, dedication, and passion is the key to success.
