Greetings!

The next two weeks are packed with Badminton and the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event taking place. PRO would like to wish all our members the best of luck at these competitions!

PRO is working with Equestrian Events International to help support the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. On Tuesday morning, Allison Springer and Jessica Phoenix will join Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear at the Booker T. Washington Academy in Lexington as part of the Black Stallion Literacy program. On Friday, Julie Richards and Bobby Costello will once again host the Owner's Course Walk for all owners of horses entered in Rolex and owners of horses competed by PRO members throughout the year. This year, we are happy to announce that transportation will be provided. Saturday features the first PRO Q&A for spectators with a panel of riders. This informal question-and-answer gathering will take place at the demonstration ring outside of the main arena at 4:15PM.

IN THE START BOX, with HEATHER GILLETTE

questyHeather will be competing at Rolex with Our Questionnaire, owned by Kathleen McDernott

1. What horse changed your career?

Pickle Road.  He taught me patience and we learned and grew together. He was hot, tough, cheeky and fearless. I had to ride him every step. If I asked him, he would do anything ... if I told him, it was a different story. He lived for cross-country ... a galloping fool. I have much longer arms now than I did when I first started with him.

2. Can you tell us about your pre-competition routine and/or rituals?

I like to go through all of my trunks and just confirm I have at least one of everything. I have to know where everything is so I can find it as soon as I need it.  When I am in a hurry at an event, I don't look for things calmly.

3. What's the best advice you have for riders who want to increase their riding skills and horsemanship?

To increase riding skills, learn to FEEL and pay attention to what your horse is telling you. Get out of your head. Horsemanship... put hours in at the barn doing everything and ask lots of questions.

4. What is your educational background?

I have a BA from Rutgers in Economics (International specialty) and a minor in American Studies.

5. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Right now ... I would like to save the world from environmental disasters caused by man.

6. Last book read?

Long Lost by Harlen Coben - a great author!

7. If you weren't a professional event rider, what would you be?

NOT AS POOR!!  Maybe less tired.

8. What famous person (living or deceased) would you most like to have a conversation with?

My father, who passed away 20 years ago.We have a lot of catching up to do. He was my biggest supporter.

9. Which phase do you like most and why?

Cross-country, for its challenges and its true test of partnership with my horses. (I have a growing appreciation for dressage and do really enjoy it now much more than I used too.)

10. When and why did you decide to turn professional?

In 1996, shortly after I bought Pickle.  He was an awesome youngster who deserved my total attention. I had to make a choice; I was doing corporate work and riding and teaching.  I got too busy to do both and chose what makes me happy, which is being on a horse as often as possible.

11. How did your family respond to your decision to ride horses professionally?

I don't think they were surprised. It was always what I loved doing.

12. Which horseman/horsewoman has been the most influential in your own development or career?

Marilyn Payne taught me a lot when I was young ... how to just get on any horse, sort it out and get it to go better. Stephen Bradley, for helping me when the jumps got big! ... and for making me do things correctly.I always call him first when I need help.
