Calling All Handymen (and Women)!
We need your help!

Our loyal BBBS-NW sandwich board sign (picture 1) has seen better days, and it's starting to show the wear and tear. Particularly, the plastic molding around the edges is coming apart, making it much less sturdy (picture 2). Click on either picture to see a full-size version.

If you have skills, tools, or ideas to help us fix our sign, we will be very grateful! Please contact Katie Allison, at [email protected].

Happy 4th!
Our party on top of the Herald building was lots of fun, and we were delighted with the outpouring of community support. Thanks to all who attended!

To those who couldn't make it, we hope you had a safe and happy Independence Day as well.

What's New with BBBS-NW?

Summer break isn't the only exciting thing going on lately! A lot of new developments are happening around BBBS-NW, and we thought you might like to know about some of them.

 - At the end of the school year, we did the math, and found that our School Buddy matches met for a total of 1,782 hours. That adds up to a whole lot of mentoring moments!

 - After a long, competitive process, our United Way funding has been approved for a three-year cycle. With so many worthy non-profits vying for limited funds, we are truly delighted with this outcome, and look forward to bringing mentors to more children in the next three years.

 - Our average match length is currently 26 months, compared to the BBBS national goal of 17.2.

It's been a great year for BBBS-NW so far, and it's only halfway over. Got your own news or stories to share about mentoring? We'd love to hear them! Send them to [email protected].

This Local Business Makes a BIG Difference!
Mt. Baker Theatre

The Mt. Baker Theatre (MBT) in downtown Bellingham offers something for everyone, from curious kids to veteran connoisseurs of the performing arts. Their historic stage holds classes, concerts, and of course plays and musicals for all ages, as well as performances more difficult to categorize. They play host to visiting stars and shows, while also producing their own plays in-house.

Better than just surviving the tough  economic times, MBT is thriving! In the last year, they celebrated their 85th anniversary, set a new total attendance record, and hosted more than 50 events for other community organizations, including BBBS-NW. They are aided by the "Stars," a group of over 250 dedicated volunteers who are committed to MBT's work.

Some upcoming shows include reggae star Ziggy Marley, comedian Brian Regan, fiddler Natalie MacMaster, and multiple fairy tales from the Missoula Children's Theatre. Visit  www.mountbakertheatre.com for the full list; tickets can be purchased online or by calling (360) 734-6080. MBT is located at 104 North Commercial Street, so look for their iconic red and white tower.

Try This Project: Easy Homemade Butterfingers

Satisfy your sweet tooth with these easy, tasty treats. You'll be amazed by how much they taste like the real thing!

You'll need:

3 cups candy corn

1 1/2 cups smooth peanut butter

16-oz package milk chocolate chips or chocolate candy coating

Step 1: Place the candy corn in a large bowl and microwave for 1 minute. Stir and return to microwave. Continue heating in 30 second increments until completely melted, stirring in between.

Step 2: Stir in the peanut butter. The heat from the candy corn should melt the peanut butter, but if not return to the microwave for 15 seconds. Stir to combine.

Step 3: Spread the mixture into an 8x8 baking dish lined with parchment paper. Smooth it out evenly in the pan. Let cool for one hour and then use a pizza cutter to slice into bars.

Step 4: Melt the chocolate chips or candy melts in the microwave. Carefully dip the candy bars into the melted chocolate and turn to coat.

Step 5: Place on a parchment lined baking sheet and wait for the chocolate to set. Store at room temperature for a chewy texture or in the fridge for a more crisp texture.
