Honeycrisp Kringle Weekend at Bellewood

Nothing says Washington better than apples! That's why we are so happy to announce that throughout the weekend of December 17-18, Bellewood Acres will be holding a holiday fundraiser for BBBS-NW. Bellewood will donate 10% of all purchases made that weekend to us, contributing to brighter futures for more local children.

Come drink hot cider, make your own apple pies, and celebrate the holiday spirit with Bellewood Acres and Big Brothers Big Sisters!
BBBS Shopping Day at Village Books

On January 15th, Village Books in Fairhaven will be generously holding a shopping day fundraiser to benefit BBBS-NW. For each purchase made that day with our special coupon, Village Books will donate 10% of the price to us. A BBBS-NW staff member will also be there, answering questions and distributing information.  Watch your email--we'll send the coupon soon, and it must be presented with your purchase.

So come by and say hello, get some new books to read by the fireplace, and support the youth of Whatcom County!

Be an All-Star for Kids with Jamie Moyer
at the Big Breakfast!
Register Today

You do NOT want to miss BBBS-NW's 2012 Big Breakfast! We are delighted to announce that Jamie Moyer, former Seattle Mariners pitcher and Major League Baseball All-Star, will give the keynote speech, along with his wife and partner in philanthropy, Karen. In addition to his baseball prowess, Jamie is a former Big Brother and committed humanitarian, with his own foundation dedicated to helping children in distress.

The Big Breakfast will be held on January 31st, from 7:30-8:30 a.m., at the Lakeway Inn and Conference Center, and this year will be able to accommodate 400 guests--quadrupling last year's capacity.

Jamie and Karen started the Moyer Foundation in Seattle, while Jamie was pitching for the Mariners. Since then, the foundation has raised more than $20 million on behalf of children in need. BBBS-NW is honored and excited to have Jamie and Karen speak at this event.

To reserve your seat, RSVP with Lori McKnight at (360) 671-6400 x 103 or lorim@bbbs-nw.org. We look forward to seeing you there!

More Matches to Make, Thanks to Successful Auction Gala!

Fire spinning, belly dancing, and dashing for desserts all featured prominently at BBBS-NW's November 5th Auction Gala, but most importantly, more than 250 people came to show their support for the youth of Whatcom County.

Thanks to our generous donors, guests, and volunteers, the auction raised $107,000--a 22% increase over last year! Because of the overwhelming support from our community, we will be able to match more children than ever with the mentors they deserve in 2012.

The highlight of the night was the keynote speech by Little Sister Jessa, who recently celebrated her 10-year match anniversary with her Big Sister, Sharon. Jessa's story of Sharon's incredible impact on her life brought tears to more than a few eyes in the audience, and it's the kind of story we want to help write for every child we can.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, or donated; you made this event a BIG success!

Thanks to the Event Committee and the many Volunteers that helped to make the evening so successful. There are too many of you to name!

Thank you also to our BBBS Staff and Board of Directors, our Auctioneer Gaye Godfrye, Master of Ceremonies Brad Cash, and Whatcom Sound; to our many Live and Silent Auction item donors; to our entertainers, Blonde Ambition Belly Dancers, and Jayson Radmer's Fire Spinning Crew; and of course to our Auction Sponsors: BP Cherry Point, Columbia Bank, Blue Sea Systems, Barlean's Organic Oils, Best Western Lakeway Inn, Inquirewithin.com, Brambleberry, Barkey Village Family Dentistry, ConocoPhillips, Unity Group.
Meet the BBBS-NW Staff:
Samantha Dennison

Samantha Dennison (formerly Samantha DeSoer) first came to Big Brothers Big Sisters not as an employee, but as a mentor. While working in higher education, she realized her job wasn't truly satisfying her desire to advocate for children. So in December of 2007, she became a Big Sister, and remained one until her Little aged out of the program three years later.

An employee since 2008, Samantha handles enrollment, match support, and activity planning for the Community-Based Program. Rather than working with children individually, she oversees 60 matches, and enjoys the satisfaction of "making a difference for a generation." Gathering and distributing important, helpful information is one of her favorite aspects of her work.

Samantha's dream job would be as a middle school counselor, helping kids with the trials of adolescence. "Children really need an adult that listens to them," she says. "I think they have a lot of adults that talk to them, but not enough that listen."

Bring the priceless gift of a mentor to a local child by donating to BBBS-NW this holiday season.  If you call with a holiday donation, we will send a card to the recipient, letting them know that a donation has been made in their name.

Start something bigger than yourself today!
