Greetings!
Welcome to the second quarterly Las Positas College Foundation newsletter of 2011! Last year, this newsletter was created to better connect you - our invaluable campus and regional communities - with the College and the Foundation's shared goal of building a brighter future together.
Now that we are well into the second year, we hope to develop that goal further by not only developing resources that support the College but by also informing the community about the College and promoting its opportunities, resources, and benefits.
LPC serves the entire Tri-Valley area from its campus in Livermore. The College educates students to transfer to four-year universities and colleges and for technical and vocational careers, while also offering life-long learning opportunities for continuous education. |

"Giving and Getting"
Supporter and Recipient Spotlight
| | Sharon Dosanjh |
Each year, the ValleyCare Health System Auxiliary awards special scholarships to high school seniors in the area who are planning to enter the health care field. Students, who are awarded the ValleyCare scholarships, will continue to receive scholarship funds on an annual basis throughout their medical college careers.
LPC student Sharon Dosanjh is one of those who received the $1000 ValleyCare scholarship when she graduated from Livermore High School in 2009.
"My heart and passion will always lie in the medical field," Sharon said. "Without the help of my ValleyCare scholarship, it would not have been possible."
She says the scholarship allowed her to fully concentrate on school and her future goals. Sharon also had the opportunity to work as a volunteer at ValleyCare Hospital, where she said her aspirations and dreams of working in the medical field were further reinforced. The experience, she said, has made her more determined to finish school and accomplish her career goals.
At the end of spring 2011, Sharon will be graduating from LPC with an AA Degree in Liberal Arts & Science. In fall 2011, she plans on transferring to San Jose State University where she will major in Health Science and minor in Nutrition.
"I thank the ValleyCare Health System for everything it has done and how much it has helped me accomplish my dreams for the future," Sharon said.
ValleyCare Auxiliary raises funds for its scholarships through sales at its gift shop and the thrift shop. |

Calling All Alumni!
It's no secret that Las Positas College is comprised of a broad and diverse demographic.
Students who attend LPC are there for any number of reasons, whether it's using the College as a stepping stone to a four-year institution (LPC ranks in the top 10 for transfers of 112 CA community colleges), taking advantage of the highly regarded career/technical programs, enhancing individual skills, or for personal enrichment.
For those reasons alone, it makes sense for former students to stay in touch with the school that has helped them to attain their goals. In the coming months, the Foundation will be unveiling a structure for LPC alumni in all fields to stay in touch. The structure will include value-added aspects that will ensure that LPC alumni continue to receive benefits from the college.
We are asking LPC alumni to send us your current contact information. |

Best Of The Best 2011 Gala
Once a year, the Foundation holds a black tie fundraising event. Aside from experiencing the Best of the Best in performing arts, gourmet food, and fine local wine, attendees will have an opportunity to support the Foundation in all that it does for the College community.
This year, the eighth annual Best of the Best gala will be held on April 30 in the elegant new Barbara Fracisco Mertes Center for the Arts on the LPC campus. During the evening, three exceptional local civic leaders who are among the Best of the Best in their communities will be honored:
- Stephen Hanke - Superintendant, Dublin Unified School District
- Andy Jorgensen - Civic Arts Manager (Ret.), City of Pleasanton
- Christine Wente - Fifth Generation Winegrower, Wente Vineyards
The evening will begin with guests sampling Livermore Valley wines and delicious hors d'oeuvres presented by exceptional Tri-Valley restaurants in the beautiful new Las Positas College Mertes arts center.
Mid-way through the evening, the guests will move from the pre-reception to the theater for a performing arts showcase featuring student presentations of dance, vocal, music, and interpretive speaking. And finally, presentations will be made to the community honorees, followed by dessert and champagne in celebration of the college and the guests of honor.
Throughout the evening, guests will have the opportunity to bid on unique items that include wine country meals and adventures, special sessions - such as a condo in Kona or wine tasting - and high-end lifestyle packages for professional, cultural, and sporting events.
Best of the Best gala tickets are priced at $125 each for a lovely evening with the beneficiaries being the students, faculty, staff, and greater community that Las Positas serves.
Those who are interested in attending can register online at LPCFoundation.org or call (925) 424-1014. |
