Greetings!
Welcome to the second quarterly Las Positas College Foundation newsletter! This newsletter was created to better connect you -- our invaluable campus and regional community -- with the College and the Foundation's shared goal of building a brighter future together.
Las Positas College serves the entire Tri-Valley from its campus in Livermore. LPC educates students for transfer to four-year universities and colleges and for technical and vocational careers, while also offering life-long learning opportunities for continuous education.
The LPC Foundation informs our regional community about the College its members own and promotes the College's opportunities, resources, and benefits. The LPCF also develops resources supporting the College.

"Giving and Getting"
Supporter and Recipient Spotlight
At the 2008 LPC Foundation "Best of the Best" gala, the guests participated in a special "Fund-a-Need" reverse auction. The bidding began at $1,500 and went down to the $750, $325, $150 and $75 levels. In just over 15 minutes more than $25,000 was raised to underwrite the Veterans First Program (VFP) at Las Positas College. This strong support for the emerging program set the groundwork for enhanced veterans services that include scholarships, book loans, counseling, and peer assistance for our returning heroes. We could not be more proud that colleges throughout the state now emulate the LPC VFP.
James McGuirk is a student veteran who was awarded a Veterans First scholarship during the spring of 2009. Jim began attending Las Positas College in 2007 after serving in the Army from 2001-2006 with two deployments in Iraq.
Jim provided guidance and advice to the Veterans First Initiative Task Force as the group began developing services and programs for student veterans at Las Positas College. In addition, Jim was the driving force behind the College's summer transition program -- Operation Gateway -- which supports new returning Veterans.
Jim is planning to transfer to a four-year college in fall 2010 with a major in mechanical engineering. His goal is to help develop prosthetics for veterans who have lost limbs in combat. He recently received the LPC Student of the Year Award presented by Sandia National Laboratories and the Livermore Chamber of Commerce. Our best wishes for continued success go to James McGuirk, a student Veteran who exemplifies how one can balance studies and community service. Thanks to his efforts, the Veterans First Initiative, to which Jim has offered his services, will greatly benefit others who will follow him.

How Your Support Can Do More
$3 of good for every $2 invested
The Osher Initiative for California Community College Students supports student success and opportunity by creating a permanent fund for scholarships, offering long-term relief to the rising costs that keep many students from completing their education. Launched on May 6, 2008 with an initial gift of $25 million from The Bernard Osher Foundation -- along with an additional pledge of $25 million in matching funds -- this is the largest gift ever made to a community college system. This effort includes an historic three-year matching fundraising campaign to create a $100 million endowment that will touch the lives of thousands of Community College students each year. It will literally help to safeguard the promise of an education for future generations. Participating in this program, Las Positas College offers two ways to support deserving students in the Tri-Valley: - Every two dollars invested in the Osher Initiative Scholarship Endowment through Las Positas College will be matched with one dollar by the Osher Foundation. These investments, when pooled with other support totaling $13,500 in "new money," will enable LPC to offer a yearly $1,000 Osher scholarship in perpetuity.
- The Initiative also created a unique opportunity to establish $1,000 named scholarships for deserving students in perpetuity. The one-time investment for a named scholarship is just $13,500. The scholarship can be named for an individual, group or business and can be directed to a specific discipline or directed to a worthy student in any program at the College.
Please consider supporting the students of Las Positas College through this transformative Initiative created by the Bernard Osher Foundation. The beneficiaries will be individual students at LPC, but also all of us in the Tri-Valley whose lives those students will touch.
