Greetings!
Welcome to the premiere issue of the quarterly Las Positas College Foundation newsletter! This newsletter was created to inform you: our invaluable campus and regional community, of the College and the Foundation's past, present, and future. We are inextricably connected in our mutual goal of building a brighter future together.
Las Positas College serves the entire Tri-Valley from its campus in
Livermore. LPC educates students for transfer to four-year universities and colleges and for technical and vocational careers, while also offering life-long learning opportunities. We serve traditional and non-traditional students, including new high school graduates and seasoned citizens.
The LPC Foundation informs our regional community about their college and promotes its opportunities, resources, and benefits. The LPCF also develops resources supporting the college.

"Giving and Getting"
Supporter and Recipient Spotlight
Sybase, a name with which we all are familiar, is based in Dublin, CA. In 2007, the company exceeded the $1 billion mark followed by another ten percent growth in 2008. Directed by Chairman, CEO and President John Chen, Sybase is a market leader in data management, analytics, mobile messaging and enterprise mobility. Sybase is also a leader when it comes to social responsibility. We are deeply grateful to John and Sybase Inc. for their $20,000 gift to the Las Positas College Foundation for scholarship funding in Spring 2009.
Lauren Serkland received one of the Sybase Inc. scholarships and writes: "I'll look back fondly on my time at LPC. My career goal is to help survivors of domestic violence after I earn a graduate degree. The scholarship from Sybase will greatly assist my transition to UC Santa Barbara where I am currently pursuing a BA in Sociology. I will be ever-grateful to the wonderful people at Sybase and LPC who have believed in and supported me."
The LPC community is very proud of Lauren and wishes her continued successes!

Impact of the State Budget & Economy
The state budget and economy impact the college in terms of both financial resources and demand for services. State support for LPC has decreased by almost $1.5M for the 2009-10 academic year, while at the same time enrollment from Fall 2008 to this Fall increased 13%. That is a staggering 22% higher enrollment than Fall 2007. While this enrollment growth at a time of diminished state support challenges the college, the escalating enrollment also demonstrates the terrific service and need that Las Positas College answers in our community.
The general economy and the fact that student fees increased by over 25% per unit effective Fall 2009 has had a dramatic impact on LPC students. Financial Aid applications this Fall, when compared to Fall 2008, have increased 43% and are already well ahead of the entire 2008-09 Academic year.
With the unprecedented cuts in state support, private giving has never been more needed or significant. Transfer classes to four-year institutions, career and technical instruction, as well as special student services such as CalWorks (i.e., "welfare to work") and disabled students programs have been affected. The need is great; no programs have been unaffected. Philanthropic giving has necessarily become a greater part of the LPC budget and therefore makes a much greater difference to the college and especially the students. We hope that you will join our efforts and invest in the future by supporting Las Positas College.
