Business Continuity Tip

Be Ready in the New Year

It's a new year. It's a time for new beginnings and new opportunities. Everyone is optimistic and motivated to achieve new goals. But what would happen if a winter storm knocked out power to your building? What would you do if your staff were struck with an illness? How would you react if your office was burglarized and your equipment stolen?
Taken some time at the beginning of this new year to answer questions like these. Create a disaster recovery plan so that interruptions and disasters don't slow you down — and so that you always stay safe and prepared.

Quote of the Month

Laptop Give-Away

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! In our December newsletter we announced that we had two re-furbished laptops to donate. Thank you for your responses! We chose to donate one of the laptops to Bob and Joan Wiloughby who in turn gave it to the family they adopted as part of the Salvation Army’s Adopt a Family program. This family has two young children that will be able to use the laptop for their studies. The Salvation Army has been helping families in the Valley Valley since 1984. I am very proud that our team was able to help the Wiloughby’s give a local family a Happy Holiday!

When Disaster Strikes - The Big Bad Wolf
by Chris Geiser, cgeiser@pcstechnology.com

It may be superstition, but many of us still believe that catastrophes come in 3s. In the case of a catastrophic loss of business facility (i.e. hurricane, earthquake, waterlogging of fire hoses), many businesses get to experience all three of these catastrophes within the span of a few short days (or even hours).

Firstly, one must endure the physical and emotional trauma of experiencing the actual disaster. Secondly, one must pick through the pieces and assess how bad things really are. Thirdly, and the most delicate, will be communicating with employees and customers, having to tell them what’s happened, how bad it is, and what uncertainties the future holds.

3 Reasons Online Services Save Money

It is almost unthinkable to run any business successfully without e-mail. Or, for that matter, without conference calls or instant messaging services that allow employees to share information more efficiently.

The good news is that small-business owners can now opt for many of the same communications and collaboration tools much bigger companies have at their disposal-without having to shell out the on-premise technology investment once necessary for these applications. How? By subscribing to online versions of these apps; that is, by joining the ranks of companies which have opted for software as a service.

Don't Become Obsolete
By Brian Renter, Universal Information Systems, Inc.

Recently I ran into an old friend. At the end of our conversation, I asked him for his email address so we could keep in touch. Apologetically, he admitted that that he didn’t use email. He said his kids were begging him to start using email so they could keep in touch, but he really didn’t see the need.

Really? Wow!

Are you one of those people who can’t or won’t use email? Probably not, since you’re reading this. What about using a cell phone? And I don’t mean for just making phone calls. Do you text? Do you have any apps loaded on it? Know what an app is?

Do you use Facebook? How about LinkedIn? Ever use a Kindle, Nook or iPad?

I constantly hear from people who complain that they don’t hear from their grandkids, sons, daughters, nieces and nephews. They whine about never talking to their family and not knowing what is going on in their lives. I want to say to them - Wake Up! If you want to stay in touch with those around you, use the methods of communication they are using. See how quickly your grandchild responds to you after you send them a text. You will know more about your family than you really want to, once you hook up with them on Facebook.

The Power Of Saying Thank You

The wheels of business revolve with such spin and speed these days that we roll right over the courtesies. Who has time for quaint customs?

More to the point, who can afford to let competitors rush onto the new and the next while we slow down for pleasantries? You're in for a surprise.
