Client Spotlight

The Bookworm of Edwards.

Opening (or in this case, expanding) a bookstore in this day and age is kind of like opening a new music store focusing on CD and Cassette sales. It doesn’t sound like a tech savvy idea, does it? But where would we be in a world without bookstores? And how can you make one survive? Just ask Nicole and Kristi at the Bookworm of Edwards. They've built creative, diverse revenue streams and kept up with technology. For starters, they have the best crepes in town, and have built a loyal following for the cafe, creating additional foot traffic for the bookstore. They've also improved their offerings for children and visitors with many toy and gift items. And importantly, they're open to changing technology. In a world where digital books are taking business from small town bookstores, Nicole and Kristi have used this technology to boost their sales. Now, you can buy eBooks for your iPad, eReader or smart phone from The Bookworm's online store (www.bookwormofedwards.com). And when you buy on their site, you will be supporting the Bookworm just as if you went into the store to purchase a paperback. So stop in today and ask the Bookworm about buying ebooks locally. You'll be glad you did!

Business Continuity Tip

A Plan to Rely On

During a disaster, you, your family, your employees, and your neighbors will rely on each other for help. There is a shared responsibility when it comes to your level of preparedness. To be truly prepared, everyone has to work together as a team.

The Red Cross encourages three actions with their "Be Red Cross Ready" campaign: Get a Kit, Make a Plan, and Be Informed. The worst time to scramble for solutions is during an emergency. Start making personal, family, and community preparations now, so you know who to rely on.

Do you remember the Bulletin Board System for computers? You would set up your computer with your phone to call another computer (the Bulletin Board) to look for and leave messages for others. No individual email addresses, no Google. The World Wide Web started gaining popularity in the mid 1990’s and it’s been warp speed ever since! Do you remember life without your cell phone? And while technology is moving along so fast and it’s nice to just unplug every once in a while, we can also really use this technology to our benefit in many creative ways!

As you will see in this month’s Newsletter, we have some great articles about how to do just that. Far from the Bulletin Board System days, we are now seeing a surge of popularity in Cloud Computing options, and we are continuing our series of articles about Cloud computing this month.

Another interesting series of articles we’ve been featuring are about VOIP (Voice over IP) telephone systems. Our article this month gives tips for shopping for a VOIP system for your business. We are a VOIP reseller partner with Digium Switchvox and Polycom and would be happy to sit down with you to show you the advantages to a VOIP system and answer any questions you may have.

Finally, be sure to check out our Client Spotlight this month; The Bookworm of Edwards is a great example of using technology to their benefit!

The Future of Cloud Computing
By Tommy Wald, President & CEO, RIATA Technologies, Inc.

I remember when I started my career in computing in 1983, when our primary form of computing consisted of centralized mainframe/midframe computers accessed by simple dumb terminals. Since then our industry has swung from a centralized form of computing to a decentralized form of computing in which the majority of the processing power is on the desktop.

Well guess what? It appears the industry in now heading back to the same form of centralized computing in what is commonly referred to as ‘Cloud Computing’.

What is Cloud Computing?
According to Wikipedia: A way of computing, via the Internet, that broadly shares computer resources instead of having local servers that handle specific applications. Simply stated “Cloud” is a metaphor for the internet.

IT Phone Home!
Diana Johnson, Wood Networks

Few things are as critical to your business as a phone system. Even with the sky-rocketing percentages of people using social media and the steady rise of email correspondence; people still use the phone as a critical business tool. A phone call allows instant communication and response time. With a phone call you can pick up the subtle nuances of speech and timbre that do not translate in electronic communications. All the emoticons in the world can’t clarify the simple things you can pick up on a phone call. There is also something comforting about talking to a live person. You know they understand your need and that they are willing to meet that need.

The problem is that so many businesses are using outdated or home-use phones in a commercial environment. There are many options out there for Business Class Phone Systems. Remember all phone systems are not created equal!

When selecting a Business Class Phone System ask the following questions:

3 PC Ways to Get Rid of an Old PC
by Kim Komando
used with permission from the Microsoft Small Business Center

Are you getting a new PC, or a set of new PCs for your business? If so, the question becomes: What do I do with that old clunker?

Don't just cart it off to the nearest dumpster and help clog up some landfill with electronic waste. There are better, more environmentally-friendly options to consider.

First of all, someone could use your old computer. Or maybe you could trade it in on a new one. At the least, you could pay a small fee to a recycler to take it off your hands.

Let's look at three ways to dispose of an old computer.

Make Social Networking Work:  7 Tips
by Christopher Elliott
reprinted with permission from the Microsoft Small Business Center

Social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter connect millions of like-minded people every day through the Web. But did you know they also can help your small business connect with customers?

"Social networking can help promote a small business in two ways," says Susan Barnes, a professor and associate director for at Rochester Institute of Technology's Lab for Social Computing. "Loyal customers can create small networks and provide testimonials for the business and employees can share information with each other through social networks."
