DACC Promoting Parent Partnerships
This monthly column will highlight topics for parents that will hopefully be informative and interesting. In addition, it is designed to strengthen the school, student, and family partnership, with the goal of improving student performance.
Did you know that according to educational research, as students advance through school, parents tend to be less involved with their child's education? Could the reasons be that a school building can be intimidating or can trigger bad feelings from when you were in high school? For some, entering the doors of a school building will trigger flashbacks of all the negative experiences they had growing up. On the other hand, maybe your high school experience was "the best four years of your life." If your experiences were not so positive, consider how you might approach supporting your child by discussing your feelings with a trusted friend, a family member, pastor, or other professional, as this might be a way to put your prior experiences behind you. Let DACC help support you by having you visit your child's program, even if it is not for a parent-teacher conference. Just pick up the phone and let us know when you would like to visit and see firsthand what your child is learning. If you feel intimidated by the school setting, it will be comforting to know that most educators got into this field because they felt it was their calling and wanted to help kids. Furthermore, every staff member is here to help you and make a difference in you and your child's life. We are here to serve students and without you and your family we would not exist as an academic institution. Most importantly, your son/daughter needs you. Today's high school students face many difficult choices-which classes to take, what college to attend, what major to choose, and who to hang out with. The choices of today can become the path for the future. I know it may be hard for you to believe, but your high school student wants you to be involved in his/her life and these young adults need you more than you think. So let us know how we may be of service to you or your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or e-mail; we want to hear from you. If you have any suggestions for topics or wish to comment on the column, please e-mail me at wilsont@delawareareacc.org. I look forward to partnering with you over the course of the school year.
~ Mr. Tom Wilson

Fire Service Donation
Our Fire Service students can sometimes be the toughest around, but last Thursday was an emotional day for everyone. After the death of fellow classmate, Kenneth "Chet" Ruzika, all of the area fire departments came to show their support to the DACC fire staff and students. Last week, they returned with a gift - a Denver Tool. This was Chet's go-to tool, so it has a special meaning for the entire class. For more information please visit our website.
