Age With Grace and Style

Greetings!

We are continuing our offer for $25 tongue and fingernail analysis
 until December 31.
So far, the response has been amazing!  Over 40 of our readers have stopped in for short visits and have received, via email, our evaluations and suggestions.

As we mentioned in last month's Pacific Naturopathic Newsletter, we are compiling a database that explains anomalies in tongues and fingernails from a Western perspective.  Eastern health practitioners have relied on this method of evaluation for centuries and explain their findings in terms of different energies in the body, like "deficient kidney chi."  We are reframing our analysis and explanation in Western terminology, and have already identified in our patients conditions that need to be immediately addressed.

If you would like to participate, please phone our office at 650-917-1121 for an appointment for an evaluation.

This month's newsletter addresses aging -- a condition every person, at one time or another, must look at for themselves. As Kitty Collins said, "Aging appears the only way to live a long life."  All of us want to age as gracefully as we can with the fewest limitations on our experience of life as possible.

In this month's issue, Dr.Connie discusses spiritual community as being the truest form of personal security as we age and gives advice on anti-aging nutrients.  Dr. Marcel offers his take on why it is so important to have physical and spiritual health throughout our lives, and Dr. Corrine integrates the mind/body themes of naturopathic medicine in her anti-aging protocol.

Be Well!

Wherein Does

Your Security Lie?

Each one of us is inexorably aging. Patients in their early thirties and forties often tell us that they suppose they feel the way that they do because they are getting old. Those patients who wouldn't otherwise be worried about their own aging worry because they see their parents aging, and generally facing issues that they themselves do not want to face.

The thought of aging tends to have negative connotations and to provoke fear. We think of wrinkles and hair loss; physical, mental and financial problems; loss of memory; loss of independence. We fear what life may be like when we can no longer function in the ways in which we have become accustomed.

My mother, at 91, after 6 years of being cared for in my sister's home, is now living in a full time care facility in a state of advanced Alzheimer's disease. We have made end of life decisions for her, including "comfort care only" for the past 6 months. We occasionally see a glimmer of recognition in her eyes, and she maintains her sweetness through all the indignities she suffers. She lives in a world we cannot access, but we take comfort in seeing her with no apparent awareness of physical cares and concerns.

As naturopaths, it is always in our minds that optimizing our health now will help prevent problems in the future, and forestall many of the conditions that might land us in a similar situation.  At a current cost of $7,500 per month for long term care, we have also been impressed with the need to secure long term care insurance for ourselves in the event that we should find ourselves in such a situation in the future. Many long term care policies allow for home care by qualified personnel, allowing elders to stay in home or communal situations.

Marcel Hernandez-Llopis

Dr. Marcel's father is cared for in a private home by our community of friends on the Big Island of Hawaii, and will celebrate his 99th birthday next month. He has found his security in integration into this loving and nurturing community that values the presence of an elder in their lives. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. I say that it takes a village to transition an elder.

Spiritual community offers even greater security. In ages past, it was common for women to retire to nunneries to turn inwards after a life of external involvement. Modern times require many more years of involvement in the external world. Balancing that external involvement with spiritual practices in our early years, and deepening those practices as we disengage from the affairs of the world, whether by choice or by necessity, helps us identify more with unchanging spiritual reality, and less with the ever changing reality of physical form. Spiritual community supports our identity as beings of spirit.  Now there's security!

Basic Anti-Aging Nutrients

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

The older we get, it seems, the more we need to pay attention to the care and maintenance of our bodies.

It can all become so complicated, deciding what supplements to take on a daily basis. Patients come in to the clinic with bags of well-researched supplements, all of which make perfect sense.  It doesn't make sense, however, to swallow handfuls of pills without knowing whether they are really necessary, or whether they are actually doing what it is that they are supposed to be doing.

We can evaluate supplement protocols through our subjective experience, and through more objective laboratory values.  Three month trials of various protocols can be evaluated through conventional laboratory testing, intracellular nutrient testing, lipoprotein particle profiles, salivary adrenal and hormonal testing, breast thermography and other methods.

Ideally, we would all be living in pristine environments, eating organic locally grown foods from rich soils and wild sources. In that world, very little else would be necessary. In this world, foods are often not replete with nutrients, and environmental pollutants further deplete our bodily resources.

  omega 3

The most glaring deficiencies I see are of the omega-3 fatty acids, found in vegetarian sources such as flax and hemp and pumpkin seeds, and in walnuts. The active essential fatty acids EPA and DHA are not found in these sources, but are found in fish such as salmon and in some algae sources. Supplementing with either the fish or algae sources of EPA and DHA is fundamental to maintaining good health as we age. If I were to choose one supplement, it would be an omega 3 supplement.

In addition to omega 3's, a multi vitamin multi nutrient formula is generally required. As we age, we tend to have lower stomach acid, a condition which inhibits the absorption of B6, B12, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D (among other things). Taking the multis with lemon water or raw organic apple cider vinegar can promote absorption. However, because of the great need for B12 and folic acid, we often resort to adding a sublingual of these nutrients.

Beyond these supplements, we can add in supplements which address specific conditions a person might have or wish to prevent. Be aware that many advertised supplements replicate each other, and while that's not bad for you, it may not be good for your pocket book. One of the services we provide at Pacific Naturopathic is a review and consolidation of supplements that you are taking.  If you feel confused, come on in, and we'll try to simplify your protocol for you.

This month's fingernail file...

Do You Have Parallel
Vertical Ridges on Your Nails?

One of the most frequent questions we receive in our practice has to do with the meaning of parallel vertical ridges on the fingernails.

parallel ridges
Like wrinkles and sags, parallel ridges on nails
may simply be a sign of aging

At our recent training with Dr. Chi, we found the answer to this question.

Vertical ridges are common in persons over the age of 50.  As you all know, common doesn't mean optimal, or even normal.

Vertical ridges may be benign or may reflect conditions that you might want to address. Most commonly, the ridges reflect malabsorption which has resulted in vitamin or mineral deficiencies. The most common nutrient deficiencies reflected in the nails are vitamin A, and deficiencies of nutrients affected by low stomach acid (B6, B12, folic acid, D, calcium, and magnesium).

Especially in middle-aged people, vertical ridges may often reflect conditions of adrenal fatigue, anxiety, or irritability. Folks with weak kidneys may also see these ridges developing.

In young adults, vertical ridges may reflect respiratory problems. When seen in teenagers, vertical ridges may signal drug usage.

What should you do if you have these ridges?  There are a number of places where you might begin to optimize your health.  Your could opt for micronutrient testing which would give a clear indication of what is needed.  Employing various strategies for improving nutrient absorption is another place to start. Or you could just take a high quality, balanced multivitamin and assume that your needs will be met.

Confused?  Well, give us a call and make an appointment (650-917-1121) and we'll help guide you through the options.  Also, please check out our special offer for tongue and fingernail analysis, below.  The offer expires December 31, 2012.

Aging Gracefully on

the Road to Mahasamadhi

I used to think that when I finally left my body, I wanted it to be during the night while I slept so I wouldn't have to deal with pain, suffering and a stream of visitors coming to bid adieu to a desiccated, old carcass. Just poof! and it would be over. That was the old concept.

Then the great Indian sage, Paramhansa Yogananda, entered my life and I learned the meaning of the term "mahasamadhi."  Samadhi is a meditative state that is achieved when the consciousness of the meditator merges with God. It is through samadhi that the meditator gains God Realization and enlightenment.  Mahasamadhi (the final samadhi) is the act of consciously and intentionally leaving one's body at the time of death to merge with the Divine. That is how Yogananda did it and that's what I wanted, too.

Then I realized that for me to have a mahasamadhi experience, I would need to be as healthy as I could be when the time approached so the aches and whines of my old body were not a distraction.  And even if my body's complaints tried to distract me, I wanted to be strong enough spiritually to maintain a powerful meditative focus so I could experience the bliss of reunion with the cosmic consciousness.  So at this point, my two-pronged approach is to attune as closely as I can with my highest vision, that which I know to be true in every pore of my being, and to keep this body in the best shape possible.

In my role as a naturopathic doctor I tell my patients that the choice of a spiritual path is a unique and individualized decision. There are many paths to Self Realization, many "rays of the one light." Studies have confirmed that serious illnesses have better outcomes and are emotionally easier to deal with when there is an upward focus. My own personal experience has proven this to be true as well.

As naturopathic doctors, Dr. Connie, Dr. Corrine and I are absolutely dedicated to our patients' health on spiritual, mental/emotional and physical planes of being.  We are tirelessly and consciously working to hone our understandings of energetic medicine, human biochemistry, physical observation, and the many diverse factors that can play a part in restoring and maintaining balance.  We are ever on the alert for new methods of insight and evaluation and tools that will help sustain vitality and joy both in ourselves and the people who come into our lives.

For example, a couple of years ago Dr. Connie attended an orchid flower essence workshop in Scotland.  Her gleanings from this seminar have helped her restore energetic balance and transform the lives of many of her patients.

In August, Dr. Connie and I had an opportunity to do something we have wanted to do for years -- study with Dr. Chi, a practitioner of Eastern Medicine who has helped popularize the art of tongue and fingernail analysis in the West.  Our mind expanding experiences with Dr. Chi are described in last month's (August) newsletter.

The outcome of our studies with Dr. Chi has been the development of new ways to gain insights into our patients' present and future health patterns -- new ways of staying vibrant and healthy as we walk the common paths of our lifetimes -- each path with the potential of a mahasamadhi.

Joy to you!

Did This Anti-Aging  Supplement Work For You?
oxypower

Did your tongue and fingernail analysis indicate a need for Dr. Chi's Oxypower?

OxyPower has tremendous anti aging effect. In addition to increasing the oxygen carrying capacity of red blood cells, research on OxyPower indicates that it protects vascular endothelial cells, helps regulate lipid metabolism, reduces lactic acid, and repairs and protects DNA damaged cells. OxyPower compares favorably to Coenzyme Q10 in its benefit to heart and lung patients and in increasing energy. It also benefits smokers, athletes, chronic fatigue patients and cancer patients.

While research results on Oxypower demonstrate efficacy for these conditions, we do like to try products ourselves, and to hear from our patients as to whether they receive benefit. We are therefore very interested in your subjective experience of Oxypower (and any other supplement you've received from us), as well as in any objective proof of the usefulness of the supplement.

Your feedback is valuable to us!  Read Dr. Connie's experience below:

dr c

"I am in excellent health and I have enormous reserves of energy. As I rarely have distressing symptoms, I almost never notice a subjective benefit from any supplement I take. With Oxypower, I immediately felt an enhancement in the quality of my energy. I would characterize the change I experience as a deeper sense of wellbeing."

OxyPower is available in our office to established patients only.

(500 mg/softgel. $50/bottle of 60 softgels. Take two capsules 2 times a day before or after meals.)

Aging: How to do it With Health and Grace

Corrine

Aging is an inevitable process that occurs as we grow older and out bodies begin wearing down. It happens when our bodies can no longer keep up with and repair the assaults it goes through on a daily basis.

Environmental factors such as the air we breathe, the lotions or soaps we use, the foods we eat, or the exercise we get affect our bodies directly and determine how much physical stress or damage we put our bodies through.

mind body
Psychological or emotional factors also affect our bodies because the mind and body are not separated.
Emotional or psychological issues are stressors that cause certain biochemical events in our bodies to occur and can lead to a breakdown in our systems.  Thus, if we are stressed, depressed, or angry, our bodies have a decreased ability to fight disease and to rebalance.  This impacts our immune systems, making us more vulnerable to  illnesses and speeding the aging process.

However, if we are happy, joyful, and grateful, our bodies will love us for it and be able to flourish and regenerate, helping to slow the aging process.

Although the aging process is inevitable, we can still ease and slow the process by taking good care of ourselves. As always, prevention and the following common-sense rules to good health are the keys! Here are some basics that will allow you to age more gracefully:

1)   Relax and decrease stress - Whether it's doing yoga, meditating, listening to music, or getting a massage, taking time to relax decreases stress hormones and increases the parasympathetic response, which turns on the healing and rejuvenating mode of the body.

2)   Get good sleep - During good sleep your body heals and restores itself.

3)   Choose more organic and whole foods, as well as more natural lotions, soaps, and shampoos. Making good choices increases the amount of essential nutrients we are providing the body as well as decreases the amount of toxins we may be taking in.

4)   Drink plenty of water - Get half your body weight in ounces of water daily to hydrate and flush toxins out.

5)   Exercise - Walk at least 20-30 minutes most days to relieve stress, aid sleep, and ward off depression.

6)    Supplement with a good multivitamin and antioxidants.  This helps supply any nutrients that may be missing in your diet and helps rid your body of damaging free radicals.

7)   Supplement with fish oil. Fish oil helps to decrease overall inflammation in the body and is great for your skin, heart, and brain.

8)   Laugh daily! - Laughter relieves stress and floods our bodies with feel-good hormones, aiding the regeneration process.

These are just a few lifestyle changes that can help you to look better as well as feel better in your daily life.  For treatments more tailored to your needs or for a general preventive visit, come in and see us today!

Breast Thermography
for Young and Old

More Information is Always Better

Normal thermog photo
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

Breast thermography is a valuable screening tool, both for younger and for older women. Younger women generally have much denser breast tissue than older women. Radiologists now question the accuracy of mammography in screening for breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue, and new laws require that these women be informed of the problems in interpretation of their findings. Breast thermography does not have this problem, as interpretation is based on abnormalities in vasculature, which can easily be visualized, and on temperature variations.

Older women often utilize hormone replacement therapy to address menopausal symptoms. Using breast thermography, we can visualize vascular patterns which indicate the effect of various estrogen delivery methods and dosing schedules on the breast tissue, as well as effects from other internal and external sources of estrogen. Noting estrogen dominant conditions, we can modulate levels and facilitate healthier aging.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

Two Types of Thermography Offered at Pacific Naturopathic

At Pacific Naturopathic, we offer two types of thermography, both of which address physiologic change in the body. Readers may be more familiar with Breast Thermography (see below), which helps us determine differences in vasculature and temperature between the breasts.

The other type of thermography offered at Pacific Naturopathic is called Contact Regulation Thermography (CRT).

bodyscan
CRT: Safe and highly informative

Contact Regulation Thermography screens the body from head to pelvic floor, measuring the temperature at 119 points. The first measurements are taken with the body at rest. After a 10 minute cold challenge, temperatures are taken again to assess the body's response to stress.

Evaluation of temperatures can help determine points of inflammation in the meridian and musculoskeletal system, can pinpoint areas of lymphatic congestion, can detect hidden imbalance, and can track referred pain.

Your temperature measurements are evaluated in the context of a data bank of thousands of scans. You are provided with a comprehensive written report of findings, and given the opportunity to discuss the implication of those findings with Ardell, who has extensive training in CRT. Should the scan indicate a need to address an underlying imbalance, Ardell will recommend that you see your health care practitioner, or make an appointment with one of the doctors at Pacific Naturopathic.

The cost of a CRT is $275.  To schedule an appointment, please phone 650-917-1121.

Reduce Inflammation and Stress:

La Stone Body Therapy with Ardell Hill

      la stone

Reducing inflammation is a key to treating almost every condition, from Alzheimers to arthritis to cancer to cardiovascular disease. LaStone Therapy reduces inflammation through therapeutic placement of cool stones over areas of the body that are inflamed. The entire body is supported as the temperature differential enhances the flow of blood and lymph.

A LaStone therapy session begins with warming the entire body to soften chronically tight muscles.  Warming the muscle relaxes both the muscle and adjoining tissues and calms the nervous system.  Using the cool stones, where needed, stops the pain-spasm-pain cycle and brings in fresh oxygenated blood.

The use of warm and cool stones together helps the body remember how to regulate itself and stop patterns of inflammation.

LaStone therapist Ardell Hill approaches  LaStone Therapy sessions with a wide range of experience which she tailors to meet your individual needs. She draws from modalities including Swedish massage, Cranio-Sacral, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Jin Shin Jyutsu and Reiki, all of which are enhanced with the use of warm and cool stones.

To book a LaStone session with Ardell, please phone Pacific Naturopathic at 650-917-1121.
