Are You Healthy, Or Just Not Sick Enough To Be Evaluated?
|
Greetings!
Our bodies have a remarkable ability to adapt to the stresses we encounter. To a Naturopathic Doctor, stress triggers include not only the obvious challenges presented by finances, relationships, and family and work issues. Our bodies are also stressed by environmental factors such as the air we breathe and the food we eat. Our own thoughts and interpretations of reality may be the biggest stress of all.
As time goes by, the stressors impact us. Insidiously, our vitality is impaired. We adapt and move on. When medium-sized breakdowns set in, some of us seek assistance and restoration. Others simply try to maintain previous levels of functioning. Many people wait to seek assistance until a major breakdown in function occurs.
At Pacific Naturopathic, we advocate evaluation and corrective maintenance BEFORE a major meltdown occurs. Naturopathic Doctors do this better than any other health practitioners. We specialize in preventing major breakdowns by maintaining biochemical balance and integrity. We do, of course, also help our patients overcome health challenges. But we love it when our patients come to see us when they are well, wanting to optimize their vitality and to establish biochemical baselines that reflect health instead of disease. The tests and techniques that we use at Pacific Naturopathic evaluate your own unique functional, biochemical profile.
Dr. Connie writes about wellness and offers information on the Hernandez Wellness Panel, a blood panel we designed to provide a comprehensive baseline evaluation of your health. You will not find a better value on a blood panel anywhere.
By using an actual patient case example, Dr. Marcel offers insights into how a naturopathic doctor works to restore vital force through evaluation and balancing. Dr. Corrine writes on one of the most powerful and effective tools in the naturopathic therapeutic repertoire -- metabolic detoxification.
To your wellness!
--Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel

When is the Last Time You Felt Well? I Mean, Really Well? Given my own age, and given that my oldest patients are in their 90s, I consider patients in their late 30's and early 40's to be quite young. Yet these younger patients often come in to the office telling me that they are not feeling well, saying that the reason is that they are getting old. I hear a similar message from recovering cancer patients, told by their doctors that they are not feeling well because they had treatment for cancer, and that the lack of vitality they feel is normal and just to be expected. Not feeling well is actually not to be expected in either case. In terms of aging, there are many vibrant older people. These are people who have met their health challenges in creative ways, have prioritized their health care, and have made lifestyle changes supportive of wellness. Just as our cars require preventive diagnostics and appropriate maintenance, so do our bodies. If we simply wait until the tires blow, we'll have a disaster on our hands. But if we keep the tires filled with air, rotate them, and replace them when they are worn, we avoid disaster. Such is the case with our health. With recovering cancer patients, they are feeling unwell because the chemo or radiation has had the effect of imbalancing their bodies. The question for us is how to discern what systems have been affected and what nutrients have been depleted, so that we can treat as appropriate to help the person feel better again. In one remarkable case of mine, treatment was as simple as giving megadoses of vitamin B12 in a form that the patient could absorb. After months of hearing her doctor tell her that her lack of health was to be expected given the therapies she had undergone, she was energetic again within the month. Many of us have grown to expect that our journey through life will be fraught with minor and sometimes major symptoms of imbalance in body, mind and spirit. We tend to believe that that's the way it is and we adapt. I often ask patients when it was that they last felt well, and find that many people simply can not remember waking in the morning with a sense of health and well being. If that is the case with you, you may want to consider taking a more in depth look at your health.... now, while there is no disaster on the horizon. |
Testing For Wellness at Pacific Naturopathic -- Easy, Inexpensive Testing Yields Pages of Information Connie Hernandez, N.D.
I am delighted when patients call wanting to optimize their health. At Pacific Naturopathic and Pacific Naturopathic Retreat Center, wellness and optimal functioning are our goals. With these goals in mind, we designed a comprehensive and economic 24 hour fasting blood work panel which we call the "Wellness Panel" to assess important parameters, and to establish a baseline for our patients. (Test results, of course, are just one of many ways to assess balances and imbalances that affect your present and future quality of life).
The Pacific Naturopathic Wellness Panel goes above and beyond the usual blood work ordered at a conventional yearly health exam. That blood work is intended to rule out common diagnosable conditions. Whereas we certainly do value such diagnostics, and diagnose as appropriate, at Pacific Naturopathic we also test for optimal functioning. All typically ordered tests are included in our Wellness Panel. However, as our intention is not just that our patients not be sick, but rather that their health be optimal, we include many other tests as well.
As with all lab tests that we order, we provide you, the patient, with a copy for your records. Your history of personal blood work allows us to compare you with you when evaluating where you are in your health in the present moment of time. Comparative values offer far more information than those obtained when we address a single moment of time. We personally repeat our own blood work every 6 months to 2 years, depending on what is happening in our lives, and how we feel our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health to be.
When we evaluate your blood work, we take into account the fact that the standard listed laboratory ranges generally refer to the 5th to the 95th percentiles of the not necessarily well general population. And, as mentioned above, the conventional tests with their listed range of values are geared to the diagnosis of pathology. They are not designed to assess optimal function. It is for this reason that your conventional doctor may tell you that everything is fine, while our assessment may indicate a multitude of ways to optimize your health and well being.
The Wellness Panel is generally our first step in testing. Beyond the Wellness Panel, we offer many complementary and specialty tests. Examples are salivary testing for male and female hormones and for adrenal gland function; comprehensive digestive stool analyses; intracellular nutrient analyses; lipoprotein particle profiles; urinary hormonal metabolites; food sensitivity and allergy testing. Tests like our urinary bone loss test help us to directly assess body functions. These tests and others allow us to probe to deeper levels in our efforts to understand why you may not be as well as you should be and would like to be, and also to understand how you might prevent future problems from developing.

The Case of the Utterly Exhausted Silicon Valley Engineer -- How a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) Helps Restore Vitality Don, an engineer for a famous computer company, came in to see me telling me that he is tired most of the time and the only thing that keeps him going is - you guessed it - caffeine and sugar binges. His job is high stress; his productivity during the past few months has noticeably declined; he doesn't sleep all that well; his meals are often gobbled on the run; his waistline is expanding; and work and family expectations on him are crushing burdens. I can't tell you how many times I've heard variations on this story in the almost 20 years I've been practicing in the Valley. Although Don is 39 and works for a technology company, I hear versions of Don's tale from 20-somethings to 70-somethings from many professions. Unmanaged stress, an increasingly negative life experience, erratic sleep, lack of exercise and a poor diet guarantee physical, and perhaps mental breakdown. It's only a matter of time. Most men respond to physical decline differently than most women do. Men tend to ignore the early warning signs and attempt to push through their health challenges, trying to keep up with the demands placed upon them. Women, on the other hand, tend to be more in tune with their cycles and more proactive in their health care. Many men are literally pushed into my office by their spouses. Those who know their husbands well remain during the initial office visit to assist their partners' memories and provide reality checks, as men tend to unintentionally minimize their level of dysfunction. They are just not that tuned in. Interestingly quite a few men are not even aware that they are stressed out. They accept that their experience is just how life is. Like Don, by the time many men come to see me, the cumulative overwhelm of their lives has manifested in physical depletion. For some of these men, there are serious, deeply set issues to deal with in addition to the fatigue. These men may need specific cardiovascular protocols, hormonal balancing, or even adjunctive prostate cancer therapy and counseling, specialties of mine which are often called for in my work with men. With other men, working with lifestyle issues and determining and correcting nutrient deficiencies can be transformational. This work is ongoing and monitored, as restoring vibrancy and vital force is only part of the job. Without the tools to stay centered in their restored vitality, many men drift back into old patterns. I tell my patients that they are each born with a genetically endowed bank account of good health. Just like a savings account in a bank, if they make continuous withdrawals from this account, sooner or later they will be overdrawn, in a depleted state, vulnerable to unpleasant outcomes. To continue the analogy, making regular deposits to the genetic bank account provides a deep resource that may be drawn upon in times of emergency without worry of depletion. Deposits are all lifestyle choice based - regular exercise, a conscious diet, a positive attitude and effective stress management techniques. Easier written than done. Although each person's situation is different, a thorough biochemical evaluation is where I begin with everyone. The Hernandez Wellness Panel, described in Dr. Connie's article above, gives an awesome amount of information to work with. There is a vast difference between having your blood test interpreted by a naturopathic doctor (ND) or by most conventional doctors. More than just telling you everything is OK or within range, NDs go over each lab component, providing you with detailed information on your own unique biochemistry, and integrating components and systems with one another -- like, how your adrenals influence your blood sugar, or how a congested liver wrecks havoc with your blood lipids. Having this information helps you take command of your own health as you learn how to tune into your own rhythms and supply your body what it needs when you need it. With the data garnered from the initial office visit (an information-packed 90 minutes), we determine if any other testing is required to evaluate organ function and nutrient depletion. For many men, normalizing hormone (especially testosterone) imbalances can be incredibly restorative, as can optimizing adrenal gland function. Micronutrient testing can help identify deficiencies in key energy production cycles. Other specialized testing may also indicate the path to restored vitality. Back to Don. We decided to begin with the Hernandez Wellness Panel and go one evaluation at a time, as needed. We saw that Don's blood sugar and lipids were elevated, he was mildly Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficient, and, as is typical with unmitigated stress, his adrenals were malfunctioning. This was about 7 months ago. I see Don every five to six weeks. He reports that his energy is 60 to 70 percent restored, he is mostly following his individualized nutrition regimen and is sleeping better. Utilizing his new comprehensive health plan, Don is learning how to make deposits to his bank account of good health. This story will have a happy ending. Optimizing Your Health Through Detoxification
Nowadays, constant exposure to multiple chemicals and toxins in our environment can lead to a variety of symptoms that can eventually become disease states.
Before turning into a disease state, however, symptoms may be vague, and we may just feel fatigue, slight depression or agitation, headaches, brain fog or memory issues, difficulty losing weight, as well as a number of other symptoms.
We may not feel particularly sick and may actually feel alright, but maybe we start feeling more tired or sluggish and not as energetic as we used to. Because of all the physical, chemical, and energetic pollutants around us combined with our busy lives, it is easy to feel suboptimal and a bit run-down.
A great way to reenergize and optimize our health is through a general detoxification. With a detox program, we can limit our exposure to incoming toxins, speed the process of clearing them out, and give our bodies and minds a fresh start. Our detox program includes nutritional support by following dietary guidelines as well as providing supplements to improve the body's natural detoxification processes through our organs of elimination, such as the liver.
In as little as 10 days on the program, you can start to feel more energized, clear, and focused. Instead of waiting until you feel sick before doing a detox program, why not go through one to prevent illness and to feel your best? For more information about a detox program, please visit my website or phone the clinic to make an appointment for a consultation.

Breast Thermography
at Pacific Naturopathic
Providing A Wealth of Information
|
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information
|
In medicine, it is easier to promote wellness and prevent disease than it is to treat a disease state once it has developed.
By establishing a baseline thermography, we note normal patterns of breast temperature and blood vessel distribution. Sequential thermographies track changes in the baseline pattern, indicating a movement away from the norm. Movement away from the norm can indicate an imbalance of hormones, lymphatic congestion, inflammation, or developing breast disease. Noting these conditions, we can address them. We can rebalance body functions and we can prevent future deviation from the norm. We can also evaluate the efficacy of treatment protocols by tracking changes in the patterns revealed on repeated breast thermography exams.
Noting physiologic changes in the breasts and optimizing breast health with natural treatment protocols makes so much more sense than waiting for the physiologic changes to cause structural changes which would then show up on a breast mammogram. At that point, we move from prevention to treatment.
The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

Two Types of Thermography Offered at Pacific Naturopathic
At Pacific Naturopathic, we offer two types of thermography, both of which address physiologic change in the body. Readers may be more familiar with Breast Thermography (see below), which helps us determine differences in vasculature and temperature between the breasts.
The other type of thermography offered at Pacific Naturopathic is called Contact Regulation Thermography (CRT).
|
CRT: Safe and highly informative
|
Contact Regulation Thermography screens the body from head to pelvic floor, measuring the temperature at 119 points. The first measurements are taken with the body at rest. After a 10 minute cold challenge, temperatures are taken again to assess the body's response to stress.
Evaluation of temperatures can help determine points of inflammation in the meridian and musculoskeletal system, can pinpoint areas of lymphatic congestion, can detect hidden imbalance, and can track referred pain.
Your temperature measurements are evaluated in the context of a data bank of thousands of scans. You are provided with a comprehensive written report of findings, and given the opportunity to discuss the implication of those findings with Ardell, who has extensive training in CRT. Should the scan indicate a need to address an underlying imbalance, Ardell will recommend that you see your health care practitioner, or make an appointment with one of the doctors at Pacific Naturopathic.
The cost of a CRT is $275. To schedule an appointment, please phone 650-917-1121.

Transformational, Stress Reducing, Feel Good Services Offered at Pacific Naturopathic ____________
Reduce Inflammation and Stress: La Stone Body Therapy with Ardell Hill
Reducing inflammation is a key to treating almost every condition, from Alzheimers to arthritis to cancer to cardiovascular disease. LaStone Therapy reduces inflammation through therapeutic placement of cool stones over areas of the body that are inflamed. The entire body is supported as the temperature differential enhances the flow of blood and lymph.
A LaStone therapy session begins with warming the entire body to soften chronically tight muscles. Warming the muscle relaxes both the muscle and adjoining tissues and calms the nervous system. Using the cool stones, where needed, stops the pain-spasm-pain cycle and brings in fresh oxygenated blood.
The use of warm and cool stones together helps the body remember how to regulate itself and stop patterns of inflammation.
LaStone therapist Ardell Hill approaches LaStone Therapy sessions with a wide range of experience which she tailors to meet your individual needs. She draws from modalities including Swedish massage, Cranio-Sacral, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Jin Shin Jyutsu and Reiki, all of which are enhanced with the use of warm and cool stones.
To book a LaStone session with Ardell, please phone Pacific Naturopathic at 650-917-1121.
