Tired of Being Tired? Read This and Believe You Can Feel Great!
|
Greetings!
Persistent tiredness is the single most common complaint we see in our practice. Most people would like to have more energy, but the fatigue we are talking about in this newsletter is not the kind that can be relieved by a good night's sleep. What we are talking about is a tiredness that undermines your day-to-day functioning and significantly affects the quality of your life.
The most common causes for fatigue are discussed below. Sorting out the cause and finding a solution for you as an individual involves detective work. A few of the investigative pathways are discussed by Dr. Marcel. Dr. Connie offers ten easy ways to increase energy and Dr. Corrine writes of reconnecting with the inner vitality that is your birthright. If chronic pain is one of the issues contributing to your fatigue, working with our resident healer and miracle-worker, Elijah Free may be just what you need.
Whatever the source of your fatigue, at Pacific Naturopathic we utilize cutting edge diagnostics and highly effective remedies to bring balance back into your life and restore well-being. Our goal is to help you reclaim the vitality and energy that is your birthright.

ENERGY! We live in fast moving, mind boggling times -- politically, economically, electronically, scientifically. The only constant is change itself. We have progressed, in culture and consciousness, from Newtonian understandings of the nature of realty to the understandings of Einstein. We now know that we live in a sea of energy; that there is an energetic reality to our physical beings; that physical reality is patterned by this energetic reality. The energetic reality is the more powerful and causative reality. In reflection of this understanding, medical diagnosis and treatment have moved to the use of ultrasounds, lasers, and devices which sense and emit electromagnetic frequencies. Naturopathic medicine is, at its roots, a medicine based on energy. Naturopathic medicine has its origins in the understanding of and respect for the Vix Medicatrix Naturae, or the healing power of nature -- that nonphysical energy that permeates all living organisms. That energy has been called by many names, names primarily known through spiritual healing traditions. It is prana, it is chi. Paramahansa Yogananda described that energy as conscious cosmic energy. I like that description as it reflects inherent intelligence. Naturopathic medicine, as a vitalistic medicine, endeavors to unblock and encourage the free flow of conscious cosmic energy through the body. It is that energy that balances, harmonizes, vitalizes and heals. To resonate with and move that energy, we have homeopathic medicines and flower essences, acupuncture, and hand healing. We have therapies based on light and sound, heat and cold, and on the five elements.... earth, air, water, fire, and ether. These healing modalities are fundamental to the flow of healing energy throughout the body. This being a scientifically savvy age, naturopathy has also adopted and adapted sophisticated diagnostics and treatments based on physics and biochemistry, nutrigenomics, and electronics. This is well and good. I do find myself, however, yearning for the balance of the water cures of the early 20th century, the ancient sun and sound based healing centers, mud baths and more -- all of which attempt to free the energy flow. Beyond that are those practices which teach direct access and channeling of conscious cosmic energy... deep meditation, spiritually based yoga, chi kung. tai chi. My personal practice includes the Energization Exercises, a series of 39 exercises brought to us by Paramahansa Yogananda to awaken and direct conscious cosmic energy through our bodies. Enjoying these exercises on a daily basis, I find my spine aligning itself, imbalances correcting themselves, energy expanding, vitality returning. Were I to chose one health practice to do on a daily basis, whether for mental, emotional, or spiritual reasons, it would be the Energization Exercises. Energization posters, and a companion book by Yogananda, How to Achieve Glowing Health and Vitality, are available now at Pacific Naturopathic. Energization classes are taught at Ananda Palo Alto as class 2 of the meditation class series. For more on energy and healing through energy, see sidebar for information on a 9 class series at Ananda, directed by Dr Shanti and Dr Connie, and beginning April 11th. Feeling Fatigued? Ten Simple Solutions! Connie Hernandez, N.D. One of the most common complaints we hear in the office is that of fatigue. There are many reasons why fatigue might occur: anemia, infection, chronic illness, low thyroid, adrenal exhaustion, hormonal imbalance, excesses or deficiencies of various nutrients and foods, stress, depression, pain. Sometimes testing and history do not reveal an obvious cause for the fatigue. That doesn't mean that nothing can be done. In fact, there are simple vitalizing techniques that can benefit just about everyone. Here are some of my favorites.
Energize.
My very favorite way to energize is through breath movement techniques. Yoga. Chi Kung. Tai Chi. Energization Exercises. (See above for information on Energizations.)
Affirm.
Negative expression is fatiguing. Positive expression uplifts and vitalizes. You can create your own affirmation. I use one from Swami Kriyananda: "Within me lies the energy to accomplish all that I will to do. Behind my every act is God's infinite power."
Breathe.
Breath is life. In the book How to Achieve Glowing Health and Vitality, Yogananda suggests this breathing exercise: Exhale slowly, counting from 1 to 6. While the lungs are empty, mentally count from 1 to 6. Inhale slowly, counting from 1 to 6, then hold the breath, counting from 1 to 6. Repeat eleven times.
Ground.
Walking barefoot on the earth, you connect with the earth element and draw on the magnetic field of the earth. This field normalizes your body rhythms and restores your own electromagnetism.
Serve.
When we serve others, we forget ourselves, and open ourselves as channels for that energy in which we live, breathe and have our being.
Create.
Boredom is fatiguing. Indulge yourself by exploring your passions and intrinsic interests. Vision. Paint. Write. Sculpt. Build.
Sing.
Sound is an energy which has the potential to heal. Sound healing is precise in stimulating specific energy centers in the body. As a simple therapy, music which brings you joy brings you energy.
Play.
We've all heard that laughter is the best medicine. Lost in play or laughter, we are taken to a reality that is not that of the fatigue.
Nap.
Not energizing for everyone, but if you're one of the lucky ones, a ten minute cat nap can revitalize you for the rest of the day.
Skin Brush.
Dry skin brushing before showering stimulates blood circulation and lymphatic flow. Topping it off with hot/cold contrast showers (always ending with cold!), you can awaken your mind and invigorate your body.

You can feel vital and vibrant!

What Causes Fatigue and How Do We Deal With IT?
A Naturopathic Perspective
on Changing Body Chemistry
Fatigue. Exhaustion. Lethargy. Brain fog. Languidness. Lassitude. Listlessness. Weariness. In many names and guises, fatigue is the single most common complaint we hear as doctors. Even though "fatigue" has a diagnostic code in the ICD-9 guide, fatigue is not a diagnosis. It is a symptom. There is something else going on that causes the fatigue. Discovering and addressing the cause of fatigue can transform a person's life. Ah, but there's the rub. Where do we begin to look for the cause? As Naturopathic Doctors, part of our training is to look for the "center of gravity" of any ailment. When a person enters our office we do a quick scan. How is the person carrying himself/herself? Are they slumped over and shuffling along, or are they radiating energy? What is their facial expression? Have they dressed with care, or are they disheveled? Does the fatigue have its origin in the mental, emotional, spiritual or physical realm? Stasis on the spiritual path can cause fatigue, as can boredom. Depression and fatigue go hand in hand. Chronic illness and pain are fatiguing. During a naturopathic office visit, these areas are discussed and evaluated for their contributions to fatigue. On the physical level, both acute and chronic illnesses contribute to fatigue. A host of metabolic imbalances also cause fatigue. In the medical paradigm that Naturopathic Doctors work within, yes, we do prescribe remedies to alleviate symptoms, but we see our main task as discovering and eliminating the cause of a complaint such as fatigue, on whatever level(s) the cause exists. When a new acquaintance asks me, "What do you do?" and I tell them I am a Naturopathic Doctor, the most common response is a blank face as the questioner tries to understand and categorize my response. I then tell them that my specialty is changing body chemistry in the least invasive, most effective manner possible. For example, a pharmaceutical can relieve the symptoms of a migraine. But that migraine had a trigger. Once the trigger is identified and eliminated, no more migraine, no more meds. At Pacific Naturopathic, we use mainstream laboratory testing, specialty laboratory testing and cutting edge, evidence-based technologies to discover imbalances and normalize body chemistry. Here are a couple of examples of how Naturopathic Doctors at Pacific Naturopathic might evaluate the biochemistry of a patient complaining of fatigue. A good beginning point is the Hernandez Wellness Panel, a comprehensive screen we designed to assess blood chemistry. With this test we can see if iron, B-12 or folic acid anemia plays a part in our patient's fatigue. The Hernandez Panel also looks at the liver, kidneys, and thyroid gland, at electrolyte balance, and at the cardiovascular and immune systems. Imbalance in any of these can play a part in causing fatigue. We order so many Wellness panels that we negotiated an amazingly low rate with the lab. Your cost for three pages of detailed lab results is $172, about a tenth the going price. The Adrenal Stress Index looks at the circadian rhythm of your body by measuring salivary adrenal hormones collected at various times throughout the day. The adrenal glands are profoundly affected by unmanaged stress and adrenal dysfunction can be the precursor to a number of acute and chronic conditions. Your cost is $120 to Diagnostechs Lab. Intracellular Micronutrient Testing is a blood test that measures how micronutrients are actually functioning within your white blood cells. This test offers a nutritional assessment applicable to a broad variety of clinical conditions including fatigue, arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immunological and metabolic disorders, and nutritional deficiencies. Your cost is $170 to Spectra Cell Laboratories, and a blood draw fee. Most of our patients who complain about fatigue remember a time when they felt vibrant and energetic. They are tired of feeling like they are not firing on all cylinders. If you feel like this, take heart... we can help you find out why this is happening. Phone us at 650-917-1121 for an evaluation. Your Health and Vitality are Your Birthright!
Reconnect Through Craniosacral Therapy
So many things in our world today drain us of our natural state of vitality and energy.
After spending the day this past weekend with my niece, I was struck by just how alive she is and how connected she is to her own spirit. She still flows with her own life energy - playing, creating, and being in whatever state her body and mind nudge her towards in that moment.
Comparing this spontaneity my niece has with life to my mostly structured adult life (or my need to structure life), I realize just how much my own connection to life can be lost along the way as I mature.
Much of our energy as adults is spent on trying to control our lives, trying to structure and organize everything. Most of us do not spend much time anymore in the creative sphere, allowing that aspect of us to dwindle or fade away.
But that playful, creative sphere is where we can do our best healing, come up with the best solutions to things, and make the most progress. Allowing ourselves to open to the world and be open to life gives us space for wonderful things to happen. It gives us the clarity to see new opportunities or new perspectives on an old situation. It gives us space to break out of our old cycles and patterns that do not serve us and create new ones that rejuvenate us and help us grow.
We need to reconnect with ourselves, especially reconnecting with our inner child who is creative, playful, and willing to explore. In doing so, we can tap into that vital energy that can give us more vibrancy and help in our healing.
Craniosacral therapy is a great way of helping to bring our awareness back into our bodies and into our natural state of being - the state of openness, flexibility, and spontaneity.
It can help to open our hearts and bring flow back into life. Craniosacral therapy at its deepest level can access those places that may have been hidden or lost, getting us back in touch with our core self. It can help us once again find the child within, and in doing so, we can regain the vitality and zest for life that we all had as kids.

Breast Thermography
at Pacific Naturopathic:
Screening With Energy
| Normal Thermographic Pattern
|
All current breast screening tools utilize some form of energy to create images of breast tissue. Mammograms, MRIs and ultrasound are able to detect abnormal lumps and bumps in the breasts, and are used to indicate the need for biopsy. MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is generally recommended when there is a need for clarification of findings, or when women are at very high risk for breast disease. As the name implies, this medical imaging technique uses a magnetic field, plus pulses of radio wave energy, to picture organs. Ultrasound imaging, as that name implies, uses high frequency sound waves to picture soft tissue. Breast ultrasounds are generally used, as a follow up to mammograms, to differentiate solid from fluid filled lumps in the breasts. Mammograms, the primary conventional breast screening tool, send x rays through the breast tissue to form an image. Since radiation exposure is a risk factor for cancer, women have justifiable concerns. Breast thermography also relies on energy, infrared imaging in this case, to detect heat patterns in the breast. A noninvasive imaging technique, thermography neither radiates nor compresses the breast. Heat emitted from the skin is translated into electrical impulses which are seen as colors. Vascular patterns and the temperature patterns the colors reflect are interpreted, allowing the technician to detect unusual processes occurring in one or both breasts. Since physiologic change occurs before lumps and bumps form, thermography offers early screening for breast pathology. The cost to you of breast thermography is $225. Find out more about thermography at Pacific Naturopathic at:

Two Types of Thermography Offered at Pacific Naturopathic
At Pacific Naturopathic, we offer two types of thermography, both of which address physiologic change in the body. Readers may be more familiar with Breast Thermography (see below), which helps us determine differences in vasculature and temperature between the breasts.
The other type of thermography offered at Pacific Naturopathic is called Contact Regulation Thermography (CRT).
|
CRT: Safe and highly informative
|
Contact Regulation Thermography screens the body from head to pelvic floor, measuring the temperature at 119 points. The first measurements are taken with the body at rest. After a 10 minute cold challenge, temperatures are taken again to assess the body's response to stress.
Evaluation of temperatures can help determine points of inflammation in the meridian and musculoskeletal system, can pinpoint areas of lymphatic congestion, can detect hidden imbalance, and can track referred pain.
Your temperature measurements are evaluated in the context of a data bank of thousands of scans. You are provided with a comprehensive written report of findings, and given the opportunity to discuss the implication of those findings with Ardell, who has extensive training in CRT. Should the scan indicate a need to address an underlying imbalance, Ardell will recommend that you see your health care practitioner, or make an appointment with one of the doctors at Pacific Naturopathic.
The cost of a CRT is $275. To schedule an appointment, please phone 650-917-1121.

Transformational, Stress Reducing, Feel Good Services Offered at Pacific Naturopathic ____________
Reduce Inflammation and Stress: La Stone Body Therapy with Ardell Hill
Reducing inflammation is a key to treating almost every condition, from Alzheimers to arthritis to cancer to cardiovascular disease. LaStone Therapy reduces inflammation through therapeutic placement of cool stones over areas of the body that are inflamed. The entire body is supported as the temperature differential enhances the flow of blood and lymph.
A LaStone therapy session begins with warming the entire body to soften chronically tight muscles. Warming the muscle relaxes both the muscle and adjoining tissues and calms the nervous system. Using the cool stones, where needed, stops the pain-spasm-pain cycle and brings in fresh oxygenated blood.
The use of warm and cool stones together helps the body remember how to regulate itself and stop patterns of inflammation.
LaStone therapist Ardell Hill approaches LaStone Therapy sessions with a wide range of experience which she tailors to meet your individual needs. She draws from modalities including Swedish massage, Cranio-Sacral, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Jin Shin Jyutsu and Reiki, all of which are enhanced with the use of warm and cool stones.
To book a LaStone session with Ardell, please phone Pacific Naturopathic at 650-917-1121.

Let Me Introduce Myself... Nancy Schuet, Certified
Neuro-Reflex Therapist
Let me introduce myself. I am Nancy Schuet, Certified Neuro-Reflex-Therapist. As a CNRT, I trained intensively in foot reflexology and advanced massage techniques relating to feet. I apprenticed at the Neuro-Reflex Therapy Institute in Modesto, Ca., and have upgraded my skills through an ongoing relationship with the Universal College of Reflexology.
Neuro-Reflex therapy was developed by a Registered Nurse and a reflexologist especially for those with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy clients derive relief from the numbness, burning and tingling so often a problem for them, enabling them to sleep better and get on with daily activities with less pain.
I have also found that adaptations of CNRT techniques relieve pain on the soles of the feet, such as that of plantar fasciitis. Massage and reflexology techniques isolate and work out tightness in the muscles and tissues of the feet. If you have any pain on the bottom of the feet, I find that CNRT can lessen it. I often treat people who have been somewhat helped, but not cured, by physical therapy or by inserts received from podiatrists. My take home techniques further promote pain relief.
The European Reflexology I've learned through the Universal College of Reflexology emphasizes the detoxification, allergy relief, and digestive betterment that can be obtained through foot reflexology. I am always learning new techniques. Very soon, I'll be adding relaxing facial reflexology to my offerings at Pacific Naturopathic.
I have been in practice in Mountain View in a chiropractic office for the past 8 years and I have been rewarded by helping many people feel better. As you might imagine, I have accumulated quite a bit of word-of-mouth knowledge and practical information from my clients. I've learned, for example, what to do if your second toe is longer than your big toe. Give me a call and I can help you with it.
I am so excited to be joining the Pacific Naturopathic healing team. I hope to meet you soon.
To schedule an appointment with Nancy please contact her at 408-891-4759 or email her
