Dr. Connie's Musings...

                             Where Do You Stand?

holding the light
Dr. Connie on the Isle of Gigha in Scotland

Elemental and remote, the Isle of Gigha in the Inner Hebrides is a tiny island off the coast of Scotland. Achamore House, site of the seminar I attended in early September, stands in the midst of 50 acres of walled and secret gardens and hidden lanes. Rabbits and peacocks roam, and silence is supreme. It is here that Don Dennis of the Living Tree Orchid Essences produces essences from his exotic greenhouse grown orchids.

It is a most profound experience, the taking of an orchid essence. Dr. Marcel offers a perspective on energy medicine in this newsletter, and comments on how far fetched it may seem to minds mired in the physicality of this universe. Orchid essences are an outlying form of energy medicine, somewhat familiar in concept to the now popular Bach essences, as in the Bach Rescue Remedy.

Within the lore of the world of healing, it is said that all that is necessary for the healing of mankind will be provided for by the plant kingdom... pharmacologic remedies for physiologic ills, subtle energetic assists for exploration in consciousness. Orchids are an ancient and exotic plant species whose time, it seems to me, has come.

Any fantasy aspect to this idea was dispelled for me with the unmistakable sound of vertebrae popping into alignment as a drop of orchid essence (Gongora dresslerri, the orchid we call Unicorn) was dribbled on my cervical spine. Sitting with 7 others, I observed and experienced tears welling up as drops were taken under the tongue; images appearing to drops over the point where meridians meet at the top of the head... ancient memories, critical insights.

My most profound experience was with Paphiopedilum Lady Isabel, the orchid we call Rising to the Call of Beauty. A physical medicine application of this remedy is to ease shoulder pain at the end of a

Paphipedilum Lady Isabel

tiring day. On other levels, this orchid addresses humanity at a crucial crossroads, where evolution in harmony with the integrity of nature faces unintended and bizarre consequences from the manipulation of nature... GMO's, EMFs and the like. For me, this orchid brought visions of Gandolf, a call to battle to stand for that which is true, and an assist along the way. Surely this issue, this stance was within my consciousness before the drops, but it was the drops that drew the imperative forth, shaking me to the core. As our world evolves at a dizzying pace in a myriad of ways, where do you stand? Where do you stand?

 EMF Radiation and Health

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

Among the most interesting and disconcerting conversations we had in Gigha this month were those regarding the effects of electromagnetic radiation on the human body. It has long been my contention that electromagnetic radiation is a major contributor to the refractory constellation of symptoms often seen these days, most notably sleep and energy disturbances. Surf the internet and you'll find increasing concern and controversy as to the dangers posed by cellular and other wireless technology.

In England, Wales and Scotland, communications technology combines microwaves with a very low frequency carrier wave at 17.65 Hz. Unfortunately, this frequency corresponds with a waking-state brainwave pattern which Don Dennis, our host, described as electromagnetic caffeine. For sleep, brainwave patterns must be below 3 Hz, or 3 cycles per second. There are numerous stories of the insomniac sufferings of persons living close to the Tetra masts which broadcast these frequencies, and of their restoration to health when distanced from the Tetra masts. Those people living within mile of these masts risk not only sleep deprivation, but other serious health consequences ranging from heart attacks to brain hemorrhages.

Whereas the communication technology here in the USA is not precisely equivalent to the Tetramasts, there is little doubt that we are being adversely affected. What might a person do to reduce the impact on health of these technologies?

Reduce exposure. You could buck the cell phone trend and use a corded land line. Reduce cellular phone calls to a minimum, and keep the phone at a distance from your head. Remove your wireless phone bases from proximity to you in your home... these bases are mini microwave towers. Disconnect the wireless internet at night. Remember that EMF field strength drops off inversely proportional to the square of the distance. The further away you are from a power source or transformer of power, the less the exposure.

Protect yourself. Some of the same nutritional, botanical, and energy medicines used to protect from radioactive fallout also protect from EMFs. As this issue of the newsletter is focusing on energy medicine, I'll mention some of the energy medicines. (See past issues for physical medicines) We've discussed Yarrow Environmental Formula and Radinex in previous issues, and many of our readers now use them for protection. Within the Orchid Essence Line, "Soul Shield" and "Narnia Sphagnum Moss" strengthen your energy field; "Energy Matrix Protection" helps protect. An innovative option is a material developed as a protection from "electro-smog."  See www.emfields.org.

 Energy Medicine:

A Scientific Perspective

Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

If you are like many people, you may have had an inner response to the title of this column. "Energy medicine" is an emotionally loaded term that encompasses everything from the most extreme woo-woo to commonly accepted practices, like Therapeutic Touch. But there is a scientific basis for energy medicine.

Consider this. The human body is made up of molecules. These molecules are made up of atoms. Physicists tell us that these atoms are not still; they are constantly pulsating and vibrating in measurable frequencies and held in their patterns by an electromagnetic field. Measuring brain waves and heart waves are well-known "conventional" ways of detecting the frequencies and flow of energy in the body.

Equipment that can measure the frequencies of other organs like the liver, the pancreas and colon has been under development for many years now. With these tools, we are beginning to be able to determine the difference between a liver that is pulsating at a healthy frequency and one that has a compromise in function. Furthermore, we are also able to alter the unhealthy frequency so the liver cells pulsate in a healthy way.   All this will be done non-invasively -- no surgically inserted apparatus or drugs. Star Trek medicine.

The dual concepts that the body consists of atoms held together in an electromagnetic field and that by influencing that field we can create changes in the body is not new. Japanese have known for many years that magnets applied externally have beneficial effects in certain conditions. Chinese medicine is based on the premise that there is a flow of energy in the body that runs along certain circuits, or meridians. When there is a blockage in one or more of the meridians, energy stagnates and ill health results. Acupuncture and other techniques release the blockages so energy flows once again.

Music and art are other forms of energetic medicine by virtue of the way they make us feel through the effects of their unique vibrations. While listening to music or viewing art, our bodies release tension as our vibrational frequencies adjust to those of the medium we are experiencing. We are transported to the special places only art and music can take us.

For centuries, different forms of laying-on of hands have been practiced as a means of altering the energetic pattern of the body. In modern times, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, Joh-Rei and others are widely practiced. What we've observed here is that there is also a connection between the attunement or intention of the practitioner and the effectiveness of the therapy. But this is a discussion for another time.

Although much of modern Naturopathic Medicine is practiced using evidence-based therapies, the roots of our profession are deeply grounded in how the state of the mind contributes to the state of the body - how the power of the mind and the power of energies beyond the mind alter the energetic patterns of the body. As naturopathic doctors, we have a wide variety of energetic therapies in our repertoire, including flower essences, craniosacral therapy, orchid essences, homeopathy and yes, a type of laying-on of hands.

jesus

I've always thought that Jesus was able to heal the sick and create miracles because he was incredibly attuned to energetic patterns -- the pulsations of atoms -- given off by human bodies, minds and spirits. He knew how to alter the frequencies with just a look, or the touch of his hands.

In the end, who cares where healing comes from? If a particular therapy is non-invasive, harmless and in any way alleviates suffering, why not? Why limit ourselves to accessing only the world of coarse medical reality, when an entire universe of movement and pulsation is also available?

Meet Dr. Corrine Wang, N.D.
We are delighted to introduce Dr. Corrine to you... a woman of many talents. In addition to her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, she has a degree in electrical engineering from Cal Berkeley.  She will fit in very well with the territory in Silicon Valley.

While at Bastyr University in Seattle (Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel's alma mater), she received a grant to study the conventional, natural and indigenous medical systems in Peru.  Also while in Seattle, she served as a phone volunteer on the crisis line.

In addition to her general naturopathic medicine skills, we especially like that Dr. Corrine focuses on homeopathy and cranio-sacral therapy. Oh, by the way, Dr. Corrine is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

We had been thinking about bringing in another Naturopathic Doctor for a while now, and Dr. Corrine came to chat with us even before we got the word out.  Not only did we find that serendipitous, the entire office staff liked her immediately and knew that she would energetically fit in.

Dr. Corrine's introductory rates are extremely reasonable and they won't be low for long.  We highly recommend her to our patients for their health care needs.

Also, please read Dr. Corrine's self-introduction, immediately following.

I believe everyone has the right to vibrant health and happiness, and my purpose is to help you reach your goals of optimal wellness.

How may I serve you?

I believe in treating the whole person and in the body's innate ability to heal, and I will support your individual healing process with the most effective, least invasive methods possible. I will work with you to find the root causes of your illness and help to explain any questions you may have around your health issue or the treatments I use. My recommendations may include a change in dietary patterns, lifestyle counseling, nutritional and herbal supplements, homeopathy, craniosacral therapy, and other natural therapies. Some conditions I can help with include:

-        Autoimmune and chronic diseases

-        Digestive disorders

-        Allergies and asthma

-        Thyroid disorders

-        Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

-        Natural weight loss

-        Detoxification

-        Mental health challenges

-        Women's issues

How am I different?

Along with addressing the physical components of health, I strongly believe in the mind-body connection and strive to address these factors as well. I will provide you with a compassionate and empathetic space for reflection on whatever challenges you may be facing at the moment, whether they be physical or mental-emotional. Two modalities that I specialize in to help me delve deeper are homeopathy and craniosacral therapy.

Homeopathy is a subtle yet very powerful approach to healing. During the visit, I spend a great deal of time not only asking about the particularity and patterns of symptoms, but also understanding you as a whole person. After fully listening to your story, I find a remedy that is individualized to your case that best suits the whole picture of who you are.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle form of body work that can work at a very deep level. While working on your physical body, I may also be asking questions during the session to help you tune into your body more and to help release any restrictions that may be present. It can be very helpful for a number of ailments including chronic pain, anxiety, chronic fatigue, depression, and many other conditions.

By supporting the mind-body connection and helping to provide you with whatever you need for better health, I look forward to partnering with you to assist you in reaching your most vital self!

Breast Thermography

at Pacific Naturopathic:

An Energy Medicine Diagnostic

Normal thermog photo
Normal Thermographic Pattern

Breast thermography, mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs are all examples of diagnostic technologies based on energy. They are energy medicine diagnostics. Abnormal images produced by mammograms, ultrasounds and MRIS reflect abnormal structure. Breast thermography is an infrared monitoring system. Abnormal infrared images reflect abnormal physiologic processes.

Comparing one breast to the other, we can observe physiologic changes in one breast which are not occurring in the other. While we cannot make a diagnosis based on this evidence, we can observe whether the change is progressing, regressing, or remaining stable. This is valuable information in decisions as to whether to seek additional diagnostics which would reflect abnormal structure; and in monitoring the efficacy of anti inflammatory and hormonal therapies. This is energy medicine at work for us in a concrete way!

Sunset from the View House lanai

Imagine that you wake up in the morning to the songs of tropical birds. The sunrise is filtering through the palms, jacaranda and orchid trees, creating shadow patterns on the walls of your bedroom. The soft, gentle rain that fell through part of the night created a soothing cadence on the metal roof of your lovely quarters. You have slept well.

Sliding open the large glass door, you step from your bedroom out onto the lanai, take a deep breath of pure ocean air, do a few stretches and gaze out over the deep blues of the Pacific Ocean. The trade winds are light. It is a sparkling clear day. Across the channel, Maui is shrouded in a slight mist.

Donning a sarong, you walk down the lanai steps into the orchard to collect your fruit salad.

All this food is from the Hawaii retreat orchard

A couple of ripe papayas, a passion fruit or two and a starfruit tumbleinto your harvest basket. A hand of tasty apple bananas awaits you on the kitchen counter. A huge, round butter avocado and a couple of Tahitian limes complete your breakfast.

What to do after breakfast?

Should you pack a picnic lunch and hike 40 minutes through the miles of preserve bordering the estate to the spectacular coastal views from the cliffs overlooking the ocean? Perhaps a beach trip to the legendary Waipio Valley, just four miles away? Or a 5-minute trip into town to browse the galleries and have a cup of tea? There are so many things to see and do on the island, like visiting the volcano, driving up to the Mauna Kea observatories, exploring the lush drive to Hilo. Maybe you'll just lie in the hammock for a while and think about it. Or lounge in the spa. After all, it is a gorgeous day, and you are here to relax and rejuvenate.

Reduce Inflammation and Stress:

La Stone Body Therapy with Ardell Hill

      la stone

Reducing inflammation is a key to treating almost every condition, from Alzheimers to arthritis to cancer to cardiovascular disease. LaStone Therapy reduces inflammation through therapeutic placement of cool stones over areas of the body that are inflamed. The entire body is supported as the temperature differential enhances the flow of blood and lymph.

A LaStone therapy session begins with warming the entire body to soften chronically tight muscles.  Warming the muscle relaxes both the muscle and adjoining tissues and calms the nervous system.  Using the cool stones, where needed, stops the pain-spasm-pain cycle and brings in fresh oxygenated blood.

The use of warm and cool stones together helps the body remember how to regulate itself and stop patterns of inflammation.

LaStone therapist Ardell Hill approaches  LaStone Therapy sessions with a wide range of experience which she tailors to meet your individual needs. She draws from modalities including Swedish massage, Cranio-Sacral, Deep Tissue, Reflexology, Jin Shin Jyutsu and Reiki, all of which are enhanced with the use of warm and cool stones.

To book a LaStone session with Ardell, please phone Pacific Naturopathic at 650-917-1121.

  Raw, Organic Macadamia Nuts
Now Available at Our Office
Surprisingly Different and Utterly Delicious!
macnuts3
Quite simply, these are the best mac nuts you will probably ever taste. Regular visitors to our office who have discovered them put their names on our waiting list when we run out.

Why are they so good?  First of all, they are from special old-growth trees which produce nuts rich in heart-healthy mono-saturated oil, like that of olive oil.  Next, they are entirely harvested and processed by hand and slowly dehydrated at 115 degrees, preserving the integrity of the oil and maintaining the viability of the enzymes.  Most mac nuts are roasted, but not these.  They even look different, having a much darker color than conventionally grown nuts.

Macadamia nuts provide a wide range of beneficial compounds. They are a high energy food, full of protein and fiber and loaded with other important nutrients that, in concert, impact favorably on human health.

The nuts are vacuum-sealed for freshness.  You may either stop by our new office or have the nuts shipped to you.  Once you try them, you will be hooked.

Once You Try Them, There is no Going Back to Commercially Produced Mac Nuts!
