Healthy Holidays

 Greetings!

Having just turned the corner from Halloween, and still in the planning stages for Thanksgiving, many of us shake our heads at the Christmas décor and sales, and search for meaning in the madness, a way to stay healthy in body and sane in mind. In response to a patient's question, Dr. Connie suggests celebratory cleansing; Dr. Marcel offers a salt and soda soak; Elijah reflects on the gift of giving; and Tushti suggests infrared immune support. Whatever your holiday choices may be, may you experience deep gratitude and joy.

Dr. Marcel's Musings...

MarcelGrndCanynThe Transformative Power of
the Appreciation Ceremony

October and November are birthday months in my family -- Dr. Connie, myself, my father, my sister Jane, Sarah (front desk) Elijah, Jenny (former office manager) and others.  For our family and close friends, we always include what we term "Appreciation Ceremony" as part of our celebration.  It works like this:

At any gathering to celebrate a birthday, each participant says one thing they appreciate about the birthday celebrant, and then the celebrant gets to say one thing they appreciate about themselves.  Sounds like a nice, simple thing to do, right?

Actually, the process and the results are often profound, sometimes emotional and always life-changing when so much positive energy, uncensored love and pure expression are focused at one time in one place.  Ideally, acknowledgment should take place on an ongoing basis but the truth is that personal expression is often deferred in the exigencies of the moment.

Try your own Appreciation Ceremony the next time there is an opportunity and observe how worlds alter under the power of love.

A Reader's Question
Change-of-Season Cleanses

By Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

As we've been soliciting questions and suggestions for newsletter topics for a number of months now, we were so very pleased to receive input from one of our readers. She writes:

"I've had several clients ask me about a cleanse for the change of season.  Most say they feel a need to detox and others want to prep for the holidays. I usually suggest a book called Super Cleanse by Adina Niemerow.  Are there other book/resources you recommend?"

I don't know this book, although I'm interested. I might otherwise recommend Clean, Green & Lean by Dr. Walter Crinnion, but my thoughts on cleansing regimes tend towards recommendations for cookbooks in the winter months. Many people tend to equate cleansing with deprivation and denial, whereas the November/December holidays have become a time to celebrate abundance. One way to both cleanse and celebrate abundance would be to concentrate on creating healthy holiday cuisine, rather than concentrating on what you think you must deny yourself in order to be healthy. If you are considering cleansing before or during Thanksgiving and the year end holidays, I would favor exploring cookbooks on ethnic vegetarian, or raw, detox or spa cuisine, such as Silk Road Cooking A Vegetarian Journey by Najmieh Batmanglij,   The Detox Diet Cook Book by Nicola Graimes, or Raw, The Uncook Book by Juliano.

You may want to choose new routines as well as vitalizing cuisines, and these choices can free you from stagnation on many levels. Wake to lemon water to alkalinize your body. Mix and drink unsweetened cranberry juice with sparkling water and a twist of fresh lime to cleanse your lymph. Try an appertif of digestive bitters before meals to enhance digestive processes. Drink roasted dandelion root tea to promote liver health.

For nondietary methods of cleansing, use a loofa or dry skin brush before showering to promote circulation. Bounce on a mini trampoline to encourage lymphatic flow. Buy yourself a hulahoop or take dance lessons to move your body in new ways. Celebrate connections with friends by walking and talking with them, rather than by zoning out with them in passive activities. Brighten your mind by busying it with gratitude and with an attitude of service. Where the light shines, the darkness vanishes...no deprivation, denial, or suppression there.

To everything there is a season.  In my experience, adding positive routines is the cleansing opportunity in this season of the year. Stricter cleansing efforts tend to meet with success when summer turns to fall, in the new year, and when winter turns to spring.  Listen to your own inner voice to know what is best for you.

 A Simple Skin Detox

Easy to Do at Home

Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

A hundred years ago, radiation exposure wasn't even a concept in our health consciousness.  That's not the case in our modern environment where we are constantly exposed to cancer-causing radiation from medical procedures, television and computer screens, cell phones, airplane flights, cosmic rays and other natural and man-made materials in our environment.

An easy skin cleanse was developed by Dr. Hazel Parcells, a leading researcher in the field of detoxification and energy healing. Her work has changed the lives of many, who credit her with their renewed health. This amazing teacher & practitioner lived and continued her research until she passed away at the age of 106.

Dr. Parcells recommends this highly alkaline salt and soda soak to help neutralize the effects of radiation: Place 2 pounds of salt with 2 pounds of baking soda in a hot bath and soak for 20 minutes, until the water cools. That's all there is to it.

This simple soak will help cleanse your skin and keep the rest of your body healthy.

Cleansing for the Holidays

Elijah Free, MH, CMI, CMT
Shanti Rubenstone, MD

So once again the holiday season is upon us.

While many of us will be joyfully celebrating, there will be those of us who are not. For many, it is a season of extreme lack, loss and sorrow due to the  seeming economic climate of the current times.

There is much that we can do to help out our brothers and sisters who may not be as fortunate as ourselves. This can be a time of cleansing and giving for us rather than a time of over-doing it and expecting to receive yet more. The holidays can become a time of cleansing of the spirit where we lessen our emotional, mental and spiritual burden and enter the new year renewed and regenerated.

Many Native American peoples had the give-away. The give-away was to gift those who had less than us with some of what we had. It did not mean to impoverish one, but rather to share the goodness and bounty so that everyone had what was necessary to enjoy the sweet amenities of life. It was considered a form of illness to hoard and to keep so much when there were others who had so little. Generous gifting was a definitive sign of one who was in harmony with themselves, all others around them, and with the very life of Nature. To do the opposite showed a stagnant and dis-harmonious person.

There are many ways to gift these days. One of my favorite places to do so is Second Harvest Food Bank. You can find them on line at www.thefoodbank.com.

For very single dollar that is contributed, Second Harvest is able to distribute eight dollars of food to those who are in need. This is because they have special deals with many places that offer to them significant discounts on food.

Each year I send in my donation in the memory of my beloved partner who passed on. Each year many people are gifted with food as a result. Because of her, there are those who are receiving some of their sweet amenities of life. In this way, she stays alive in name and the spirit of giving.

There are, of course, many other organizations that provide food and shelter that you can donate or gift to that resonate with your beliefs and ways of thinking.

To the Native Americans, no one was blessed and complete unless all were blessed and complete. Please do something special this holiday season. Gift others. Gift many others. You may find yourself very pleased and joyful in a new way. And also cleansed and ready for the New Year.

The Bio Mat: Supporting
Your Immune System

It Can Work Wonders

As we move into chillier, wetter weather, exposing us more often to cold and flu viruses, our immune system can be increasingly challenged. To prevent the risk of "catching" what none of us wants, it's important to be proactive about taking precautionary measures, such as washing one's hands more frequently and getting sufficient rest.

Given our fast-paced lives, it is not uncommon that when cold or flu symptoms strike, many people use over-the-counter medications to suppress a fever and its achy fatigue, and then go into work all the same. We further deplete our energy stores as we push ourselves to get through the day ~ when the body needs rest most of all. Natural medicine, on the other hand, teaches that our bodies, in their own innate wisdom, will utilize the fever itself to kill the invading organisms.

This is where the BioMat can really work wonders. A session on the BioMat can be helpful in two ways. First, its Far Infrared Light Rays raise your body's temperature, boosting its immune response by inducing an "artificial fever," which gives the invading organism less of a chance to take hold. Second, as your body works more effectively to overcome the invasion, the BioMat's negative ions and amethyst crystals accentuate the healing properties of the infrared healing light, penetrating more deeply throughout your body, strengthening your immune center, easing muscle aches and joint pain, and soothing your overall nervous system as well.

I invite you to experience the "naturopathic" results the BioMat provides.

As a protective measure, especially at this time of year, I find it to be exceptional in its power to keep us healthy, energetic and happy.

Blessings, Tushti

Lymphatic Breast Massage

thermography

Lymphatic flow is integral to both whole body health and breast health. At Pacific Naturopathic, we include a handout on lymphatic breast massage technique in the packet that every new thermography patient receives. We observe that lymphatic breast massage, sometimes accompanied by herbal or homeopathic lymphatic drainage remedies, promotes positive changes in breast tissue. These changes can be observed on follow up breast thermograms in as little as 3 months.  We use comparative breast thermography in this way to track the efficacy of this cleansing method, as well as other treatments designed to improve breast health.

A New Supply of Raw,
Organic Macadamia Nuts
Now Available at Our Office
And They Are Going Fast
macs2
Quite simply, these are the best mac nuts you will probably ever taste. Regular visitors to our office who have discovered them put their names on our waiting list when we run out.

Why are they so good?  First of all, they are from special old-growth trees which produce nuts rich in heart-healthy mono-saturated oil, like that of olive oil.  Next, they are entirely harvested and processed by hand and slowly dehydrated at 115 degrees, preserving the integrity of the oil and maintaining the viability of the enzymes.  Most mac nuts are roasted, but not these.  They even look different, having a much darker color than conventionally grown nuts.

Macadamia nuts provide a wide range of beneficial compounds. They are a high energy food, full of protein and fiber and loaded with other important nutrients that, in concert, impact favorably on human health.

The nuts are vacuum-sealed for freshness.  You may either stop by our new office or have the nuts shipped to you.  Once you try them, you will be hooked.

These packages make healthy stocking stuffers!
