Main Street, Clinton. Requests for tickets to be mailed must be received by May 2.

2011 AccreditationClinton Main Street Program Receives State Accreditation

Clinton Main Street has once again received National Accreditation from the National Trust Main Street Center in Washington, D.C.  National Accreditation is the highest level of achievement recognized for local programs from the National Trust Main Street Center. The announcement was made to the local board of directors following the accreditation process on March 22, 2011.

Missouri Main Street Connections (MMSC) and National Main Street visited Clinton on March 22 meeting with a variety of committee and board members through a rigorous, on-site review process. To achieve Accreditation, the local Main Street program must meet the Ten Criteria of program service as set by the National Trust's Main Street Center and utilize all components of the Main Street Four-Point Approach® to downtown revitalization.

Accreditation evaluations are a function of the MMSC coordinating program. Support from the local municipal government is especially important and is one of the Ten Criteria. A contract between the Clinton Main Street, City of Clinton and MMSC to provide services to the local program is a requirement of Accreditation. Shown in the photo signing the contract are Diane Hannah, Clinton Main Street Director, Clinton Mayor Sam Gibbons, and Barry Glasscock, President, while other Main Street board, staff and City Council members look on.

Enter to Win During National Tourism Week

Help celebrate Clinton by taking part in a scavenger hunt set for National Tourism Week, May 7-15.

This year we're engaging in the statewide "Travel Matters" campaign, and the Clinton Convention & Visitors Bureau has big plans for local residents.

Monday, May 9 kicks off the Clinton CVB scavenger hunt running through Wednesday, May 18.

The scavenger hunt is a way for the Clinton CVB to encourage local residents to explore ClintonMO.com, where they may discover fun facts about our community.

We have set up a special "National Tourism Week" page in the Visitor section of the website. Each day new scavenger hunt clues will be posted. Anyone who turns in correct answers by the deadline will be entered to win a Branson getaway package, courtesy of KDKD Radio. The winner will be announced Friday, May 20.

Entry forms will be available at www.ClintonMO.com or at the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. Entries must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. May 18 at the Chamber of Commerce. For more information, call 885-2123.

DREAM Initiative Downtown Strategic Plan

Russ Volmert, PGAV, was recently in Clinton to present the final draft of the Downtown Strategic Plan.  He made his presentation to a combined meeting of Chamber and Main Street Board of Directors and Clinton City Council at noon on April 19.

The City Council approved adoption of the Strategic Plan at the Council meeting that evening. The Plan is an overview of what the community hopes to accomplish during the next five to ten years. There are ten goals which include things such as:

· Redevelop selected sites with infill projects

· Restore or improve key facades on the Square

· Expand and attract restaurants, entertainment and retail uses

· Improve storm water drainage around the Square

The Chamber of Commerce, Clinton Main Street and the City of Clinton will be working together to attain the goals, even as they change and evolve. A Strategic Plan is a working document to give direction and guidance to the many different groups that make up our community.

Calling All Olde Glory Days Sponsors

Olde Glory Days is June 30, July 1, 2 and 3, 2011. But before we can plan all the activities, we must have our sponsor commitments!

As you know, Olde Glory Days is free to the public and is made possible by donations and sponsorships from local business and individuals. Olde Glory Days was created as an expression of thanks to the community by Clinton's businesses and individuals and could not exist if not for the generosity of folks like you.

If you have not yet contacted the Chamber about your donation, please do so by May 2. If you have questions or need more information, please call Debby at 885-8166, or David Mills at 885-2021.

We are going to try very hard to have the Olde Glory Days tabloid printed by May 31, but in order to do so, we must have your ad copy by May 15. Thank you so much for your cooperation and help with your ad.

Thanks for your participation in Olde Glory Days. We simply could not do it without your help and we appreciate not only your financial support but your volunteerism as well.

Cruise Night & Pinewood Derby, May 14!

Our first Cruise Night of the year in Downtown Clinton is going to be a fun, family event! Jim Raysik Chrysler-GMC is the sponsor and will also be hosting a Pinewood Derby. All boys and girls, Moms and Dads are invited to participate.

Registration for Cruise Night begins at 5 p.m.; the Races begin at 6 p.m. Classes for the Pinewood Derby are as follows: Age 8 and under; Age 9-12; Age 13-18; Adult Outlaw Class; Display Class (no age limit). Trophies will be given in the kids classes and cash prizes will be offered in the Adult class. Each car can participate in only one class. Cars do not have to be newly constructed. So dust off those Pinewood Derby cars your kids made a few years ago and bring them downtown on Saturday, May 14.

If you need a Pinewood Derby car kit, they are available at The Shop on the south side of the Square.

The Pinewood Derby will operate under Standard Boy Scout Rules, but you do not have to be a scout to participate. See complete rules here.

As always, we thank our sponsor, Jim Raysik Chrysler-GMC, who enables our Cruise Night to be a free event. See you at the races!

planterNew Planters for Downtown

The Design Committee has chosen new planters for downtown that will be paid for through the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) funds. They will be delivered in mid-May. Thanks go out to Clinton Discount Building Supply for agreeing to unload and place each of the nearly 400-lb planters. The planters will be filled as soon as possible with soil and plants to enhance the appearance of downtown.

NOTE: The current, green planters are being offered to Chamber members on a first come, first served basis. The cost is $75 each.  Please call Diane at the Chamber if you are interested in purchasing any of the planters. At this time the green planters are still on the sidewalk and anyone who purchases one can pick it up there, but please call first. We will probably move them to a central site once most of them have been purchased.

Board TrainingWorkshop Held April 12

The Greater Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce partnered with Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission to host an Elected Official and Board Training Workshop on April 12. Topics included board member roles and responsibilities, presented by Rob O'Brian-Joplin Chamber of Commerce; sunshine law, present by Tom Durkin-Missouri Attorney General's Office; and Robert's rules of order, presented by Karen Goodwin-City Clerk, Florissant, MO.

"I never knew someone could make the sunshine law so entertaining!" and "This was another great workshop," are some of the statements that were heard as the 54 in attendance departed.

The Chamber and Kaysinger plan to continue to partner to host workshops to educate the community on a variety of topics.

Successful Spring Garage Sales

City-wide garage sales, sponsored by the Missouri Community Betterment committee of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, were held on April 9 and were once again quite successful. There were 75 sales signed up for the map and cooperative advertising.

A quick telephone survey on Monday morning following the garage sales to one-third of the participants revealed an average sale total of $833. This means a total of over $60,000 was put in people's pockets! If dollars turn over in a community an average of seven times, then garage sale money multiplied into $420,000 moving around our community!

In addition, restaurants, gas stations, and other retail businesses reported increased business on Saturday, the day of the garage sales. If you were out in your car, you undoubtedly noted the higher volume of traffic all over town.

So if someone asks you if garage sales actually play a part in economic development in our community, you can most assuredly answer, "Yes, they do!"
