Crappie Masters comes to Truman Lake, brings 500 guests next week
Next week Clinton will host nearly 500 guests from 22 states in what will prove to be one of the biggest sporting events we've ever hosted!
Henry Elementary students learned about water safety with SeaMore the Sea Serpent on Tuesday. | The 2010 Crappie Masters National Championship will be held on Truman Lake and we expect to see a lot of boats at our area lodging facilities. The public is encouraged to get involved with this event and welcome our visitors. Henry Elementary students have colored artwork hanging in several businesses around town to welcome the guests, and on Tuesday students enjoyed a water safety assembly geared toward youngsters. Students will also get to enjoy the boat parade that will take place Wednesday in conjunction with the tournament. "This is a rare opportunity for Clinton, and we hope everyone will come out to support the event. We want to welcome our guests with open arms and invite them to come back to our community," said Megan Asbill, Tourism director at the Chamber of Commerce. The public is encouraged to come out for the boat parade that begins at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6. The parade will begin at the Benson Center and follow Price Lane, Green Street, 2nd Street, Clinton Street and head south on 8th Street. On Thursday we'll have a great crowd for the Media Fish-Off. Media from around the area, along with legislators and Missouri Division of Tourism director Katie Steel-Danner will be present for the event. Spectators are also invited to come out to Bucksaw Marina for the weigh-ins on Friday and Saturday and for the Kids Fishing Rodeo on Saturday. For more information, call the Chamber of Commerce at 660-885-8166. |

October Business After Hours
The next Business After Hours will be October 4 at the Henry County Sheriff's Department, located at the corner of Green and Main Street. If you haven't been to the new Detention Center make sure you don't miss this chance to see it; it is quite a sight from the outside looking in (but not a place you want to call home!). Business After Hours is a great time to market your business and network with other business owners. It is held from 5-7 pm and is for all Chamber members and their guests. The November Business After Hours will be hosted by Allen Street Baptist Church on November 1. |

Local State Farm Agent Utilizes Revolving Loan Fund
Jim Oder, local State Farm Agent since 2005, knew he wanted to renovate his office at 100 N. Main in Clinton. The State Farm agency has been at the same location on the downtown square at Franklin and Main since 1955 and Jim felt it was time for an update. Jim included office renovation into his 2010 Business Plan. More private office areas and a fresh professional look was his goal. When Clinton Main Street, a division of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, finished developing guidelines for their Revolving Loan Fund (RLF), it seemed like the perfect solution for Jim to finance his office renovation. Jim checked other finance options but the RLF was the best rate. Jim also felt strongly about helping to keep the money in Clinton so he used all local labor, contractors, and supplies. "In addition," Jim said, "as I repay the loan it can be used for another business in the community. I think that is a win-win for everyone."
Jim encourages any local business thinking about expansion, interior or exterior renovation, or start-up costs, to consider using the RLF. Contact Diane Hannah at Clinton Main Street, 885-2121, to discuss your project.
From the front door, the newly updated State Farm office reveals a new wall, new floor, and double doors to create an extra office. Looking straight back, each work station now has much more privacy leading to Jim's office in the rear of the building. | |
Missouri Community Betterment Judges Come to Clinton
A group of over 60 people were at the Elk's Lodge on Wednesday, September 15 to help welcome the MCB Judges and listen to the presentations. Chairperson Zac Maggi started out by welcoming the 2010 Judges. The youth started out the program with their 2 projects. YEP (Youth Empowerment Program) Board President Bethany VanWinkle shared about the new program that they had started and other YEP members Adam Cummings, Keith Westin and Mary Langdon gave speeches pertaining to the new organization. JROTC then took the program with their involvement of a service project they have completed for the Golden Valley Nature Trails located on South 2nd Street in Clinton. The judges had a couple of questions for the youth groups and then the judges announced the Youth nomination for Clinton, Bethany VanWinkle, and the Adult nomination was Robert S. Wheeler. Zac Maggi then announced the projects for the city of Clinton. Projects chosen this year were: Piccadilly Park presented by Eric Mitchell and Diane Hannah, TREC Building presented by Jim Lawson, Scholarships presented by Elaine Mifflin, Matt Perry and Dixie Wirsig representing the Clinton School District, Olde Glory Days presented by David Mills, Olde Glory Days Chairman and last was Chamber President, Kyle Adkins who talked about the Community Branding.
