Greetings!
Spring is here and Club M is welcoming the warmer, sunnier weather! School-based matches and Club M Wednesdays meetings are starting to wind down in anticipation of summer. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time this year. We hope you all realize what tremendous impact you have. Thank you to all our community mentors who spend countless hours each month making a difference in the lives of Henry County kids! We hope everyone who volunteers know how truly wonderful, appreciated, and invaluable they are! Thank You! |
| Child Abuse Prevention Month | |
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Awareness about abuse and neglect strengthens communities and builds support for children and families in the effort to prevent child abuse.
How can you help? Here are some suggestions from the Mississippi Valley Child Protection Center:
- Help out a parent who's under stress with a few hours of child care or assistance
- Lend an ear to a parent or a child who needs to talk
- Support community programs that offer child care, parent education, family counseling, and child safety.
- visit www.childabuseqc.org for more information
Everyone has the right and responsibility to report any incidence of suspected child abuse or neglect. Here are some numbers to keep on hand if you suspect child abuse or neglect:
- DHS Reporting Hotline 1-800-362-2178
- Mt. Pleasant Police 319-385-3511
- New London Police 319-367-7700
- Wayland Police 319-256-3276
- Winfield Police 319-257-6661

Help, I need somebody! Spring is here and that can mean strong weather. Do you have an emergency or disaster plan? Does your mentee know what to do if he or she needs help? Spend some time and help your mentee think about keeping him/herself safe.
Discuss what he/she should do incase someone is hurt.
Discuss types of emergencies and how to call for help.
Discuss taking shelter when severe weather strikes.
Check out websites for emergency and disaster planning including:
The State of Iowa has N11 codes available for the public. N11 codes are 3 digit numbers that can be dialed for information, service directories, and emergency response.
- 211--community information and referrals including food, shelter, clothing, counseling, child care, legal services, and financial assistance. There are 2-1-1 call centers that serve every county in Iowa.
- 311--Non-emergency police, fire, and municipal business
- 511--Travel information provided by the DOT. Includes information on road closure due to hazardous conditions or accidents as well as construction zones and detours.
- 711--Telecommunications Relay Services for those who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or speech disabled
- 811--Call Before You Dig--and utilities will be marked to prevent interruption of service or threat to safety.
- 911--emergency response

Thank you so much to the 13 volunteers who gave their Saturday to Mentor for a Day! The kids had so much fun playing games, hanging out, swimming, and playing more games. Thanks to the IWC Developmental Psych students who were on the planning committee and all the wonderful volunteers who made the day so special for the kids. Thank You!
