The brain develops differently in youth who are victims of trauma. Here are five of ten Important considerations for mentors:
1) Causes of Trauma for at-risk youth:
abuse, neglect, violence, deprivation, chaos, threat, humiliation, degradation
2) Results of Trauma for at-risk youth:
rang of serious emotions, behavioral, cognitive, physiological, psychological problems affecting the youth, family, community and society
3)Traumatized youth are often
"frightened, spaced-out, and hyperaroused" and have difficulty with self-regulation, aggression, problems with attention, and negotiating satisfactory interpersonal relationships.
4) Experience sculpts the brain:
the brain continually senses, processes, stores, and acts in response to information from external and internal environments.
5) Exposure Counts:
consistent, predictable, nurturing, and enriched environments help develop neurobiological capabilities that increase chances for health, happiness, productivity, and creativity. Neglectful, chaotic, or terrorizing environments have an increased risk of significant problems in all domains of functioning.
