Every time you see your mentee ask what he/she is doing and thinking. Tell them about your day too. Forming a habit of frequent conversation is a key to a good relationship. Being comfortable talking about the little things leaves the door open to talk about the big things!
Are you new to mentoring or just want to know a little more about your mentee and share a little about yourself? Try "Getting to Know You" cards. Items needed: at least 2 index cards, colored pencils, pens, crayons, or markers
1) In the middle of the card write a new nickname for yourself
(Adventurous Amy or Smiley Stan).
2) In the upper right hand corner write something that is important to
you
3) In the top left corner write something you want to learn
4) In the bottom right corner write something you're good at
5) In the bottom left corner write your favorite food
Now share your card and write down what your mentee shared on the back of your card. You can use multiple cards thinking up more categories like a place you'd like to travel, favorite animal, etc., and tie, staple, paper clip or otherwise connect your cards!
