Fun Facts about the Holidays....
The poinsettia, a traditional Christmas flower, originally grew in Mexico, where it is also known as the 'Flower of the Holy Night'. Joel Poinsett first brought it to America in 1829. Candy canes began as straight white sticks of sugar candy used to decorated the Christmas trees. A choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral decided have the ends bent to depict a shepherd's crook and he would pass them out to the children to keep them quiet during the services. It wasn't until about the 20th century that candy canes acquired their red stripes.

Santa's reindeer are named Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Oh - and of course, Rudolph.
Have fun with your little Reindeer friend this Holiday! |

Greetings!
Happy Holidays from the Henry County Mentoring Program! We wish you and your family a very happy and healthy Holiday season.
Warm regards, Cassie Alaniz Program Coordinator, HCMP |
Three Activity Ideas:
1. Learn to bake Christmas Cookies (and it is so much fun eating them!)
2. Buy a disposable camera (or your digital one) and begin a scrapbook of your year together. Once a month add new pages with the things you did together .
3. Together, research paper airplane making. And make paper airplanes. See which one
1- flies the farthest,
2- is the coolest design,
3-flies the highest in the sky |
| De-Stress your Relationship | |
The holidays can become a stressful time for many people, as demands upon time, unfulfilled expectations from family, and a push to spend lots of money become overwhelming. Finding ways to prevent stress and burnout are crucial. Here are some suggestions:
- For mentors, be thoughtful as you consider any gifts for your mentee. Your time is the greatest gift you can give - though we know that to a young person excited about the season of receiving presents, this may not be true!
- Think something small, inexpensive, and meaningful. One of the best gifts to give is an experience - ice skating, making ornaments, or attending a holiday concert or show together are all activities that continue to build your friendship while also being a little more special.
- If you get an actual present for your mentee, take into consideration what he or she may be receiving from family members and do not spend more - otherwise, parents or caregivers may end up feeling embarrassed, undermined, and/or resentful.
For everyone: An experience and your time are the two best gifts we can give another person. Whether it be our spouse, children, parents, or friends. Sharing an experience together can be the best gift you give and receive this Christmas season. Instead of a wrapped gift from Kohl's this year....how about wrapping up a gift of your time. Would your love one appreciate a special dinner for the two of you....maybe an afternoon of taking silly pictures together....or even building a snowman. These memories may be more special to them! |

How to make the most of the Holiday Season
Talk about your schedule
Many of us have hectic schedules during the holidays, even travel to see family.
Talk to the child about your Holiday plans and when you will be able to see her/him again.
Send a postcard from where you are traveling to, make a phone call on Christmas Day or New Year's Eve, and/or send an email. They will know that you are thinking about them even when you are busy or out of town.
Ask what traditions they have
Your mentee might celebrate a different religious or cultural holiday then you do. Ask about what activities their family do together. Learn from one another or study a new culture this season.
Enjoy this special time with your mentee! Happy Holidays!
