Mentoring for a Day event
Eleven Children receive mentors for an afternoon

Boys and Balloons
On November 6 at the Mt. Pleasant Rec Center a day of fun was held for children waiting for a year-long mentor. A bi-annual event for the Henry County Mentoring Program, children waiting for mentors are invited to have fun and play at the Rec Center with volunteers from our community. Volunteers sign up to mentor for an afternoon with no other commitment needed.

This event not only allows the children to have a fun afternoon, but introduces them to potential mentors, and includes them in our mentoring program. Volunteer mentors who cannot commit an entire school year but want to be a mentor, can do so for just four hours on a Saturday. This event was our 2nd Mentor for a Day activity and it was a huge success!

One mentoring match actually started as a result of this day of fun. Thank you to all of our volunteer mentors and a special thanks to the Rec Center and Hy-Vee!

We have too many mentors?

child needing someone This is a wonderful situation to have....the Henry County Mentoring Program has too many trained mentors!

We currently have 15 Mt. Pleasant-based mentors available for just the right child. If you know a child who could benefit from a relationship with a mentor...sign them up or talk to their parent about having them receive the services of the Henry County Mentoring Program.

Somewhere out there are 15 children who could benefit from a relationship with one of our mentors! Do you know them?
Call Cassie at 385-8126 or refer the parent to the ISU Extension Office for an application.

Cassie Meets Dr. Mentor!

Dr. Susan Weinberger (aka. "Dr. Mentor") has been recognized for her expertise in establishing, maintaining, and evaluating school and community-based mentoring programs and school-to-work initiatives. Her work has been published widely and the program she designed has been replicated in more than 40 States, as well as in Bermuda and Canada.

Cassie was able to sit down and have dinner with Dr. Mentor at a recent Nonprofit Summit in Ames, IA this November. She was full of insight as to how to improve mentoring programming in both a school and community setting. She was very supportive of the work Iowa Mentoring programs are doing. In a word....loving our youth.

To receive FREE copies of her books, contact Cassie as her "My Mentor and Me" book series is available to all mentors at the ISU Extension Office. She has written mentoring books for Junior High, High School, and Elementary School.
