PWG Members Support Local
Army Wives

Sylvia (2nd from right) with PWG members and military wives

Inspired by Dr. Jill Biden's call-to-action on the TV show Army Wives, Sylvia Vitale, the 2010 Success Summit delegate from New York, created the Women's Military Civilian Connection to empower and strengthen military wives.

Every year we challenge Success Summit delegates (one Professional Women's Group member from every Dress for Success affiliate) to produce a Community Action Project using the leadership skills they gained at the conference to make a difference in their communities.  With the support of 10 fellow Professional Women's Group(PWG) members, Sylvia formed the Women's Military Civilian Connection that reached more than 30 women.

This past spring, the group conducted four PowerChats for the military wives at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY. The sessions focused on learning how to take time out for themselves, navigating the current job market, forming an online social network so they can support one another and some much-deserved pampering.  One session was even featured on Channel 12 News.

The final PowerChat installment was the Empowerment Ceremony co-hosted by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. The event featured several dignitaries who each paid tribute to the military wives.

The work doesn't end there though.

Sylvia speaking at the Empowerment Ceremony

Fourth of July events at Fort Hamilton next month.  The women are evaluating their program and will be creating the curriculum for next year's Women's Military Civilian Connection.

One year ago, Sylvia accepted the challenge to create a Community Action Project to unite the PWG members, demonstrate her leadership skills and impact her community. Sylvia has done just that!

"I am in awe of our accomplishments," said Sylvia.  "I am humbled to have shared this experience with so many committed and dedicated individuals working towards one goal.  Because of the Dress for Success Community Action Project, my team and I have grown exponentially and have become better, stronger leaders in the process."
