With interest in early drag racing on the rise, Cacklefest.com and the Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) are coordinating an effort to display a collection of restored and recreated cars never before seen together by the public.
Perhaps the best example of the era of the early 60's was Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach and the legendary cars that ran there year round. Located at 223 and Alemeda St., the Lions Drag Strip was the place to find revving engines and exciting races. Organized out of a need to end racing on city streets, the Lions developed this safe place, with lots of fun for only $2 on a Friday night.
The 1963, 1964 and 1965 years were typified by 392 hemi powered cars like Greer, Black and Prudhomme, the Yeakel Plymouth, the Frantic Four, Brissette and Sutherland, Tommy Ivo's Barnstormer, Chris Karamesines Chizler V, the Roland Leong Hawaiian, and the highly successful Shubert and Herbert Chevy. All of these cars and more have been invited to be part of a 12-16 car display of Lions racers at the GNRS, which takes place at the Pomona Fairground on January 28-30, 2011. Over 500 more hot rods, custom cars, motorcycles and other show vehicles will be on display at the show.
