ZC Pulse: Building a Movement

"We were surprised and thrilled by the number of questions our clients asked about the gifts.  Questions like who made it, where is the village, etc... they were actively interested and engaged.  They won't be forgetting this gift."  Christine Nattrass - Events Director, Brookfield Real Estate Service

Royal LePage

- Helping to Create Shelter Here and Around the World

The momentum continues as more and more companies take up the ZOË Challenge, choosing to leverage their planned promotional purchases for sustained social change.

Sharon Promm holding the new Cambiar passport holder

This ZC Pulse brings you the insights and experiences of Christine Nattrass, Events Director and Sharon Promm, Events Manager, at Brookfield Real Estate Services. They recently chose passport holders from the team in Guatemala as their National Chairman's Club gift and giveback.

Q.  Royal LePage has the Shelter Foundation, can you tell us a little bit about your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), focus and the ways in which you incorporate community investment into your business?

A. We are the only real estate company that has its own foundation to benefit shelters for women and children, who are fleeing violence in the home. Royal LePage covers all the administrative costs of the foundation so that all money raised goes directly to the shelters.

Since its inception ll years ago, the Shelter Foundation has raised more than $12 million dollars.  We raise support through agent donations, fundraisers, golf tournaments, and events across the country.  Our National Garage Sale for Shelter took place  in May and raised more than $420,000.00.

The money raised is allocated toward shelters in local communities where the events occur or where the agents who donate a portion of their commission choose.

Our agents are very engaged in their communities. Giving back to our communities is a significant part of our culture.

Q. Could you discuss in general the role events play at Royal LePage, the types of events you host, your goals for events?
A. We manage more than 100 events each year.  They include broker meetings, awards meetings, national and international conferences.  The event objectives vary. For example, broker meetings create an opportunity for our brokers and owners across the country to gather and share insights and best practices.

SEASONAL SPOTLIGHT:

Cambiar Passport Holder & Luggage Tag

Here is a fun way to make the essentials of travel more meaningful.  Expanding our Cambiar line from the team in Guatemala, the Passport Holder and Luggage Tag are affordable promotional items that are certain to be appreciated.  Each one comes with the story of the impact achieved by providing meaningful employment in Guatemala.  (Cambiar is the Spanish word for change)

New Cambiar Luggage Tag & Passport Holder
Cambiar Luggage Tag & Passport Holder

Both of these items are made from the finest leather that improves with use and age.  Priced affordably at $24.85 for the Passport Holder and $4.95 for the Luggage Tag, they are both available in a broad array of colours and include your company's logo.

"Through the leather projects and national craft, we build opportunities for people to provide them with training that opens the doors to other opportunities for employment income. Some of the communities impacted by our work with ZOË Alliance include Amatitlàn, El Campanero, Guatemala City, Antigua, and Xelaju." Sully Fuentes-Ayala de Rojas

FROM THE FIELD: Guatemala Update

UPDATE FROM OUR GUATEMALAN PARTNERS - ASOCIACIÓN HOGARES INTERNACIONALES PARA NINOS - GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA

"We build business opportunities because we see scarcity of education as a fundamental problem. Without training, people are denied jobs because they don't have the necessary skills. Through the leather projects, we create opportunities to provide people with training that opens the doors to other opportunities for employment income."

Rudy and Sully Rojas, Directors, Asociación Hogares Internacionales Para Ninos, a CH Global program in Guatemala

Rudy and Sully Rojas have been leading the CH Global initiative in Guatemala for 20 years. Headquartered in Guatemala City, they work with both urban and rural communities - some as close as 28 km away in Amatitlàn, and others as far away as Puerto Barrios, 300 km away in the northeastern part of the country.

Mayan ChildrenThe primary communities supported include: Puerto Barrios, El Zapatillo, Lake Amatitlàn, El Campanero, Xelaju, San Pedro, three groups in Antigua and four groups right in Guatemala City.

Their primary programs centre around four key areas of focus: Education; Community Development (including vocational training and micro-enterprise); Family Support; and Social Development

These focus areas address the key needs of the urban and rural Mayan people in Guatemala. With poverty levels second only to Haiti in the Western hemisphere, the people in these communities struggle to overcome many barriers to success

The successful working relationships that have been established are a result of the pro-active approach that Hogares Internacionales takes with local leadership. They equip local leaders to develop solutions for the challenges they face. (read the rest of this article)
You Can Take The ZOË Challenge Too!

In North America alone, $895 billion is spent on gifts, promotional items and donations each year. The ZOË Challenge to spend 10% of that on fair trade options represents an easy way to generate an $89 billion dollar investment that creates trade opportunities and dignity for indigenous business leaders.

ZOË Alliance's message to achieve this change is simple. Think 1.1.1:

1 Event

Choose 1 event each year where gift spending reflects approximately 10% of what is spent overall;

1 Approval

Get executive approval to buy items produced in accordance with fair trade principles for this event's gifts from a reputable vendor;

1 Time a Year

Repeat every year - make this a part of annual CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) plan.

If you like the idea but don't know where to start, give us a call at 647-477-4377, or drop a line at info@zoealliance.com and if we can't help you, we'll recommend someone who can.

Who is ZOË Alliance?
ZOË Alliance Inc. is a social enterprise that harnesses what we spend to help developing nations break the cycle of poverty.

ZOË Alliance helps people and companies transform impoverished villages with their regular purchases.  We stretch each dollar spent on a personal or corporate gift three ways: to purchase a gift that tells the stroy of hope; to create jobs with dignity in villages; and to donate funds toward a school or village project.

We also help companies link their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to the bottom line by making it easy to source high quality, profitable products from producer groups in villages around the globe.
