Richmond Art Center to Host Live Telethon & Full Day of Events

Richmond Art Center

2540 Barrett Avenue

Saturday, June 2nd

11:00 am - 11:00 pm

Produced in coordination with KCRT TV, the telethon is the culmination of the RAC's "i am the Richmond Art Center" campaign to raise funds for Spring and Summer programming and exhibits. Phone banks will be open throughout the day, and winning bids from an online fine art auction will be announced on-air. Auction items will be posted on the RAC's facebook page leading up to the telethon.

The telethon will feature a wide-ranging roster of artists, community leaders, local celebrities and musicians. A series of talented emcees, including actor, writer, and director Terry McGovern, author and interviewer Eileen Malone, KGO reporter Rob Artigo, and award-winning news anchors Dana King (KPIX) and Rita Williams (KTVU) will host the event. Pre-taped interview segments with RAC teachers, students and artists such as Garry Knox Bennett will offer first person testimonials regarding the legacy and significance of the Center. Also to be aired; a short documentary about Japanese-American life during World War II, inspired in part by the Richmond Art Center's acclaimed 2011 exhibit Blossoms and Thorns, which explored the history of the Japanese-American-owned greenhouses in Richmond through art and artifacts. These segments will be interspersed with live musical performances from a dozen bands.

Where to watch:
Channel 28 on Comcast
AT&T U-Verse Line-up
Channel 99 (click on "Richmond" tab and select KCRT)
Justin TV www.justin.tv/richmondartcenter
Musical performances will be held in the Main Gallery and are open to the public with a $10.00 suggested donation for entrance.

How to support the RAC:
*  Make a donation by calling telethon phone banks (phone number to be provided on-air) between 11am and 11pm on Saturday, June 2nd, online at  www.therac.org, or in-person at the RAC
*  Participate in the online auction on FaceBook
*  Sign-up for a Summer class at the Richmond Art Center

Auction items, additional emcees and special guests will be announced on the RAC's facebook page and twitter feed (@theRACenter) as they are finalized.

"The Richmond Art Center is the sum of the people who come through it; we are our students, teachers, volunteers, staff, donors and visitors," said Liz Padilla, Spring Fundraiser Chair and Administrative Director for the RAC. "Art lives inside all of us, and is expressed and made tangible through creative opportunity. It has the power to produce hope, understanding, and community. It is important. And while the need to provide a place for the Arts in our community has been increasing, the number of institutions that can provide these opportunities has been diminishing. The purpose of the telethon it to inspire people to donate, to take classes, to visit exhibits, to get involved."

The not-for-profit RAC receives no federal funding. The monies needed to maintain its operations come primarily from fees paid by members and students, contributions from sponsors, institutional foundation grants, and gifts from major donors.
